Really grim question about bike accidents
Do you guys carry emergency contact information on you when you ride? Like do you have a little card with the names and numbers of loved ones you would like to be notified in case you crash and aren't able to contact them yourself for whatever reason?
I'm gonna go on a ride in a little while and I was just thinking about that in the shower. For example, you get up early and get going on a very long ride over 2 hours away and then you plan on turning around but you never make it home because some happened to you really far away. What happens? I know the police can contact family members for you if you have your license but how long does that take? What if their info isn't updated? What if you want other people to be notified, or someone to not be notified? Anyways it's just a thought, I was thinking of carrying a card in my wallet with some basic info but don't wanna feel like I'm attracting something negative to happen to me. It's just a way of being prepared I guess. |

No, I don't, but I also have no medical history or allergies to be concerned of.
I, DO, however recommend that if you do take medications, have a specific medical history, or have drug allergies, to have a list of such. Speaking as someone who DOES the contacting in an emergency, we generally look at the cellphone / wallet. I look for a "mom"/ "dad"/ or someone who's called a bunch of times in the history, as they tend to be the closest ones. I keep my cell unlocked. |

I do.
I have a laminated card in my wallet that lists my: * full name * date of birth * current medications * medication allergies * very brief medical history * husband's name, phone number, and a note that he's my contact person I waffle between keeping it in the map pouch of my tank bag (but what if I'm thrown from the bike and the medics don't see the tank bag?) or my wallet which is in the tank bag (same concern) or on a lanyard around my neck (a lot of discomfort for something that's very unlikely to happen. For now, I've stuck with the card in my wallet.

I have been trying a bunch of different ways to get this info (other than medical history) printed onto a rubber keychain that most riders have on their bike key. I have tried a few different things but they ink doesnt stay and just rubs off so im looking for a different solution to this. The current one im trying to make has 1) Full first name 2) address 3) contact persons name 4) contact persons number 5) health card number...Anyone i have mentioned this to tells me they would like one just incase so im really trying to think of something to make it work

I can tell you we wont look at the key in the ignition of a motorcycle... especially if the bike is torn to shreds or catches fire.
Whatever emergency information you want to have available will have to be on your person. It has to be in a logical place to look for emergency contact info. Wallet, barcelet, necklace, cellphone, pockets. |

I wear my medic alert bracelet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If I am with anyone I generally tell them what needs to happen if I go down. Everyone who needs to know at my work is informed of what needs to happen and my family knows too. I don't think its a bad idea to inform people of special needs. |

Well I went out on some small rides today but I put my wife's name and contact info on a sheet of paper in the inside pocket of my jacket, in my wallet, and in my tank bag in one of the pockets that easily seen. Someones gotta find at least one of those if something were to happen to me.

It's on my dog tags, as well as my SSN, and my gas mask size
I'm in the military so I know the right people will be contacted but that always takes an entire process... Worst case scenario I crash, get knocked unconscious and have to be rushed to the hospital. They have to ID me when I get there, then run me in the system, then pull my info, then start contacting people and hoping the information is current or matching. Then the Red Cross gets involved and they contact my unit, they have to figure out if my family has been contacted yet and if not then they have to do it. At least with this info on me they can call the one person that should be notified first, my wife, and she can notify everyone else. |

After reading this thread I've realized that I've never even thought of it. Of course I have my cellphone with me at all times along with my wallet. But if my Cellphone were to break or I forget it then I have no phone numbers with me. If I were to rush out the door real quick I could easily forget my wallet, I've done it before.
Now that I've seen some of these products I think I might look into something that I wear anytime I ride. Along with some kind of sticker on my helmet to tell EMS to look for that ID. I'm thinking the dog tags or bracelet are the best idea. Just remove it while at work so it doesn't get caught on any machinery. Place it in my helmet so I can't forget it. Then when I get back on the bike to head home at night I take it out of my helmet before putting it on and place back around my neck/wrist. |

I ma be wrong, but last time I went to the dmv to get my motorcycle endorsment about 2 or 3 weeks ago, there were posters all over the walls for an online database. I meant to write the link down but never did. Basially let's you add your emergency contact info into an online database (government ran) and they can get it from that (from what I understand). Ill try to post the link. I'm pretty sure it was a florida database only though. But I doubt we're the only ones with something like this.
Also if anyone has been to the msf lately, not sure if all msf courses are handing these out and its not really emergency contact related, but now they hand out these stickers for your helmet saying somthing along the lines of "warning: do not risk paralysis by removing helmet, wait for emt or medical personel to remove helmet" so if someone were to go down bystanders won't try taking the helmet off. |

I have my wife as my emergency contact in the dmv, and I also have her name and number in front of my license in my wallet in case I am ever incapacitated.

I have my info in my wallet. I had it in my phone but gave up when I had to reset my phone twice.
Besides the phone screen would probably be destroyed. I don't want to rely on that. |

Actually, rather useless info to provide. Hospitals are not going to just go off the type you put on something, they are going to match your blood themselves.
At the very most they'll give O- before doing a match, but usually not. |

Maybe a dog tag attached to the zipper on your jacket. I'm considering putting a tag on a movable clip so it can go from jacket to jacket. I do think the ICE info on the helmet brow or chin area is a fantastic idea.

Of course there is plenty of storage on it for a medical history and a last will and testament if you wanted. You have to give the cops a little credit here. If you end up being road pizza, they will check your cell phone.
