Break-in Question

Picked up my new 2011 Green 250 Saturday and started breaking it in yesterday following the wiki link break-in post,
http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/NewBike.html
I have 33 miles on it so far.The wife is bugging me for a ride. Is it to soon or is main break-in already done so the extra weight won't matter any, now. It would be just a short ride around town.

Take her, its supposed to be fun right! Just keep your rpms under control and don't do anything crazy. It can take it.

Example; 100lb person during break-in vs 260lb person during break-in. The extra load will not matter in the end.

Just treat it as another ride/step in the break in.

the bike will be fine.

My concern would be how much riding time/experience do you have? riding with a passenger should be done only after you've mastered how to ride proficiently by yourself.

First off congrats on the new bike. As far as the break in issue there are so many different opinions on it. I say taking her around the neighborhood wont hurt but again ill defer to those with more mechanical knowledge.

However i will say this. If you are a new rider i would get some more seat time before going two up. 33 miles isnt alot of experience. Im not insulting just stating a fact. Riding two up is ALOT different than just you on the bike. I know its hard to resist the other half when she wants to go for a ride(yes pun intended) but safety first my friend. LMAO

Thanks,
I grew up with dirt bikes, raced motocross for years, I'm 48 now, had been 30 years since I rode so I went through the Motorcycle Safety Course for a refresher since I'd never rode on the street. Plus I'm older and wiser to do crazy and dumb stuff like in our younger years.

I did a 'hard break in' on mine and have no issues so far (2222miles pretty cool eh?). My uncle is a mechanic and told me to not worry about the break in that much as long as I get the oil changed around 600 miles.

Wasn't the perfect hard break in that utilizes a dyno, but I was all over the RPMS for the first 100 miles or so. After that I took it easy (MGP grower = too loud) until around 700 when I went crazy again.

Make sure you guys have gear first before going 2 up.(it's better to be safe than sorry) riding in the dirt and in the street is different.
Ride it like normal, vary the rpm a bit, and most important, fresh new oil.

Not to worry about break in. Just don't lug it down. On my Ninja--after 100mi, I rode it like I stole it. Never had a problem. Traded after 12000 miles and everything was perfect.

I leaned toward the hard break-in and that worked out fine. Change your oil very frequently in the beginning though. I think mine was at 70,150,300,600,1000 and shell rotella t6 syn at 1500 mi. Vary the rpm's.

It had been quite a few years between my 250 and the prior street bike, over 15 or so.

Honestly, let the wife buy her own or wait a little bit. Set a mile goal, like around 250 or so, before you ride 2 up. Better safe than sorry, and 250 miles can go quickly.
