Clip Ons... Who's Got em???
I know there are some of you that have clip ons on your bikes. Care to share what you used and how they are mounted?? What works... what doesn't... how the bike feels after the change... etc, etc, etc. Details, man, details!
Any input provided would be appreciated. The information I've seen regarding this mod has been scattered and sometimes not too reliable. |

If you lean foward on a stock bike and grab the brake and clutch levers, that is about how much more you will lean foward. You will have more weight on your hands and my turn in feels much lighter. Almost twichy. Might have been because tires cold or low inflation. I haven't checked it lately. I have only put about 75 miles on after changing them. i've got the vortex clipons on my bike. we had to drop the forks maybe an extra 1/2 inch to have enough fork leg sticking out above the triple tree for them to mount to. i've ridden it up and down the street and it feels pretty good. you can mount them under your triples as well, but i don't think you'd be able to clear body work without a lot of modification. even mounted on top might require a little trimming (at least it did on my hotbodies fairing).
i didn't ride the bike stock much, and i haven't been out on it much with the new parts either, so i can't give a lot of good feedback. i can say that the body positioning with the clipons and the woodcraft rearsets feel pretty good so far though. (if this image is too big, let me know and i'll edit)

For me it was the look,more like a sportbike,and getting
my head down behind screen more out of the wind. Also if you crash and bend them them you can replace just the bar for about $15. Except for the bars i have. Which are one piece Suzuki SV650s stock bars. Hand position view with both bars on at once |

the main reason is body position. it puts you in a more aggressive stance for the track. they're also much better to crash. if you don't clamp it down too hard, it'll just move stuff when you crash instead of breaking or bending. CRX is right too, much easier and cheaper to replace a bent tube.
usually i'd say they're only needed for the track, but i think the stock bars on the 250 and 650 are kinda nerdy, so if it was me i'd put them on my street bike too if i had one.

Sometimes this laptop pisses me off when I go on a long tangent and then magically it 'clicks' on something and goes off to another URL So AGAIN:
You shouldn't have to do any notching on the plastic cowling if you retain the factory master cylinder. Since the style master cylinder I'm using connects on the bottom it makes some contact with the clip-ons. Anywho: It's pretty! As for my clearance issues: With this style clip-on (as opposed to the SV650 clip-ons) the bars are moved roughly 1" forward. This in turn makes the levers come close to the wind-screen on the extreme turns. This isn't so much of a problem unless you're trying to do something like the 'box' on an MSF course That and in my case: With the banjo fitting mount on the bottom of the master cylinder I had to notch the black plastic cowling to clearance it. Sometime in the near future I'll contour some fiberglass around the hole and make it look like it's factory made Since there's no way this style clip-on would mount underneath the top-triple tree mount I had to put it above. The damned thing is tall! Albeit the fork tube is still maybe 1/4" down the clip-on, the clip-on overs 1-1/8" of the fork tube! It's really really sturdy on there. Overall I raised the fork tubes 1/2" + 10mm because it seemed like a good idea. Initially I took it out and warmed up the tires a bit. The whole setting position is a lot more sport oriented! It felt a lot more natural going around turns and probably since I dropped the front the 5/8" it does turn faster. I went on the free-way and everything felt stable at 80mph (un-corrected it was like 86-87mph). I'm very pleased with the results! I'll wait a week or so before I start doing any twisty-action to get used to the set-up, but I anticipate it. In the meantime I'm waiting for my f'ing pads to come in, new grips and rubber expansion nuts so I can retain bar-ends. |

"VEX" are the clip-ons you have installed the vortex? they appear to be diffrent from the SV650's you had postd on the other link kf
there was another thread that had a race bike with the clip-ons installed under the tree and i think he said WoodCraft was in the works for getting some made for our bike, correct me if i am wrong. |

These are the only pictures of my clip-ons I've posted. Mine are not the Vortex ones (That's Broom). By the looks of it the Vortex ones are a bit shorter in height then mine and would explain why mine don't fully grasp the fork tube.
There's a couple of people with the SV650 clip-ons and those can go underneath the top-triple tree clamp as they have an 'L' shaped design so the actual bars wind up level with the Vortex ones. Woodcrafts would be nice, but I'm sure they wouldn't be cheap I think Richard was the one that said he was going to try out Woodcraft rearsets, but not the clip-ons. I could be wrong |

thanks for posting the pics. you can lower the forks about 1" w/o problems and it will quicken the steering a bit w/o making the bike unstable on the highway. That's the amount mine was lowered with the front lowering kit I installed. |

i forgot to mention that another advantage to clipons is the ability to shift weight from front to rear or vise-versa. the lower you put your clipons the more weight you shift to the front.

^^^ Hahhah that's a great smiley. I didn't mind decreasing the trail (it quickens up steering to put it in easy phrasing), but I didn't want to sacrifice stability. That's why going down about 5/8" seemed kosher. Going down the full inch would fully expose the fork tubes for the clip-ons, but like I said they are TALL clip-ons. They are on there and aren't going anywhere and possibly affecting stability to make the clip-ons fully mount doesn't seem necessary.

And I'm saying that when I lowered mine an inch, it didn't affect highway stability like I thought it would, too.
I'm not saying to lower yours, just don't not lower it because of anticipated straight line instability... it doesn't happen. |

So the only clipons that work are SV650 ones?

I've never heard someone refer to anything as about 36.55mm. Sure it wasn't about 36.54 mm, or maybe about 36.56 mm?
