DIY - GPS Tether

After modifying Headshrink's Erector-RAM GPS mounting solution for my Garmin Street Pilot C508, I decided there was too much of a possibility of the GPS vibrating off the Arkon mini-ball stem (See first picture below). So, I decided to come up with a "tether" and hoped someone else had already found a solution. Yesterday, I did a search via Google and found these instructions:

http://www.gadgetjq.com/gps_tether.htm

This afternoon, I went to Lowes and bought the following items:

1 Easy Release Key Ring @ $2
2 Feet of 1/16" Stainless Steel Cable @ $.50

I then stopped at Advance Auto and purchased:

1 Package of 10 Interior Connectors Double-Crimp (Dorman #84170) - $6.

Since I already had a package of JB Weld on hand, I didn't spend money for it.

The current mount:

In the next picture, the white arrows show the insulation removed from the double-crimp connector (top) and an unmodified crimp connector (bottom). The yellow arrows show the crimp connectors installed on the Arkon mini-ball/RAM ball mount via the 1/16" cable (blue arrow). On the opposite end of the cable is the easy release key ring.

The following picture shows the JB Weld (yellow arrow - still drying) with one of the crimp connectors embedded in the JB Weld and cable (blue arrow) running to another crimp connector with just a cable loop. The other end of the easy release key ring will be connected to the loop (whte arrow).

Prior to sanding the mounting spot on the GPS, I had to peel off the Garmin Serial # label. I stuck it on the top rear of the GPS. Since the GPS came with a protective pouch, this adhesion spot allows for the cable/ring to fit within the pouch when removed from the bike.

Great idea. I was thinking about doing something like this during my ride this weekend, haven't had the chance to look into it yet. Thanks again Sam.
