Timing Chain Wear
Is there a service limit on timing chain stretch for the new gen 250s? I couldn't find anything in the service manual, and digging through other forum thread mentioned only the pre gen service limits.
If there is, is there a way to check the chain stretch limits on the timing chain without splitting the case? I'm still trying gather some data to track down a ticking engine noise on the right side. New CCT didn't solve the problem, valves are adjusted, cover bolts tightened in sequence and within torque specs. Ticking noise is not present when bike is cold, only when bike is warmed up. |

Ever figure it out?
Cracking it open is the best best unless you have a good eye when you're doing your valve adjustment and measuring then. It's been spoken before on here and done. I've had as stretched one and a couple of others have.

I've been wondering though what the service limit was for the can chain, I went through the service manual and I have a cyclepedia subscription, and neither one mention a service limit measurement for the cam chain. I was hoping I could find the service limit numbers for the cam chain and take a pin to pin measurement next time I do a valve adjustment |

Here's specs.
New chain should measure 20-link length under 5 kg tension = 127.0 ~ 127.4 mm. The service limit is 128.9 mm. |

What he said. Just make sure you measure from different sections as link sections stretch more than the others.

Unfortunately this test requires you to remove timing-chain from engine to measure full 20-links.
I saw another post where someone measured just 10-links, which can be done on bike. Can't find post now, but if you divide everything by 1/2, that should also work. Spin engine forward by hand to get tension on chain, then measure. Spin engine 90-120 degrees and repeat 2x more for 3 measurements total. Should give you good idea of cam-chain wear. |
