DIY R&G Tail Tidy / Fender Eliminator

Take of your license/registration plate sit back and take in just how big and ugly the stock fender is, especially if your missing the reflector as its only held on by tape.


In order to get rid of it we will first need to temporily remove some bodywork, its described in the instructions that come with the R+G and also in your owners handbook and is very straightforward. Take all this stuff off
1. Rear Seat or Rear Seat Cowl
2. Black side panel fillers pieces
3. Riders seat
4. Rear Cowl Plastics


You should have something like this left


In the boot/trunk disconnect the rear/brake light


In the boot/trunk disconnect the plate light, this piece will be fun to put back together


Now we have to disconnect the turn signal cables, they are actually located under the riders seat, one is grey one is black. The cables run up the left side of the tail to the actual indicators, free up the wires so you won't have to do it later.



Now continue to remove the 4 bolts as per the instuctions that came with the R+G which should allow the whole rear assembly with mudguard, indicaters and brake light to come away as one unit. It might take a bit of wiggling to get it off. Cables were routed so tight on mine it was holding the thing in place even with no bolts.

Next few steps will deal with transfering bits from the old fender to the new one.


Get your brake light ready, but forget the R+G instructions for a while, they go way off the mark at this point. Unclip the top part of the brake light and be carefull not to break the clips at either side. The back is held on by velcro so just pull that up. The bolts are hidden under flexible metal, just push the metal out of the way.


If you were still following the R+G instructions it would tell you to put the new brake light in first then the plate light. DON'T if you put the brake light in you will have no room to work with (i did then had to take it off again)

Lets put on the plate light (actually a pair of LED's with resistors already looked after for you, oh and they give you a spare in case the leds ever fail in one). Now the instructions talk about using superglue to put it on, again forget this. The light has 2 screws coming out of it and some washers and nuts in the bag. So put it in and put the washers and nuts on. Now these are tiny so take your time, I tightend them by hand. Its a little messy. But you should end up with something like this.


Now you can bolt on the brake and indicators on, its fairly simple and self explanitory. If your stuck the R+G instructions start to make sense again at this point Well they are go from good english to english left over from a poor translation, but you will be able to follow them if you read the instuction enough times. Use the new bolts/washers R+G give you.

So as the instuctions say "offer assembly to tail" and use the new bolts/washers R+G give you. Plug back in indicators and rear/brake light and test. Now at this point I found my front left and rear right indicators blinked at the same time, and vice versa, so obviously I had put them on the wrong way around. However remember we had 2 connectors for the indicators gray-into-gray and black-into-black, well I put black-into-gray and gray-into black and the problem was solved. Alternatively take of the R+G reverse indicators and put it back on.

Now we will have an issue with the plate light. The connector does not match up.


Options are
1. Cut connector of old light, cut these wires, splice/solder them together, plug in connector
2. Bodge it together as you don't have your soldering iron handy
3. Leave em disconnected and run no plate light for a while.

I will be doing option 1 next week, but for now I went with option 2. I crushed the connectors from the R+G, put them in the wrong side of the connector, sheilded them and taped them down. Red to Red, Black to Black even on the wrong side of the connector


Make sure your happy with everything electronic, and all bits of fit and finish before you put the bodywork bits back on.


If you are happy put it all back together

Before I closed it all up I decided to fit a powerlet usb power cable as follows....

Under riders seat, unclip relay book and lift out of way
Remove 3 screws on battery cover
Remove battery cover
Remove ground/black terminal from battery
Remove positive/red terminal from battery
Connect powerlet red terminal
Connect bike red terminal
Connect powelet black terminal
Connect bike black teriminal
Put battery cover back on
Put relay back into clips on battery cover
Route cable up to boot




Cable is 60 inches long, only needs to be 6 really

Hi Jon, I got it on ebay, like you say no cuts, only surprise part is the connector for the tail light.

Good job! Congrats. Too bad after all that work, the tag is almost as big as the original fender!

Karl could you measure for me the distance between the two bolts on the licence plate? I recently ordered the tail tidy, but I doubt whether it will fit for my plate.

They are part of the old tail assembly, so yes you will loose them.

hey all,
i got this fender eliminator last week and installed last weekend but had 2 problems so hopefully someone whos installed one of these can help. 1st i couldnt get it to match up correctly due to the indicator wires as the old madflap part had a hole which matched up to another hole for the wires on the left hand side , so had to re route wires the best i could as didnt have drill to alter it at all, also seems they provided 2 right side shim thingys that straighten the OEM indicators as my left side one is facing down and not level as the right side is.
hopefully someone whos installed one of these can give me some insight as next weekend will take off and try again as it isnt matching up correctly under the bike and also the 4 holes for the screws only just match up with abit of forcing..
PS i couldnt view any of the pics on this thread?

doh, just saw the attachment but still doesnt mention my issue, furthermore i believe something similar has been on the bike prior as the wiring was soildered and taped up with electrical tape... just thought i'd mention..
