Is this cowl broken?

Someone is selling this cowl on eBay but they aren't sure if it is broken or not. Does it look broken? I've never seen the underside of one. Thanks!

Would it even stay attached to the bike without it?

There would only be the 1 point at the back, which is a metal rod going through a rubber grommet. And its really easy to take off. Probably will go off after 1 turn, because of the front point not being attacked to anything.

You could probably make something work with this cover in terms of making it sit tight on the bike, however, probably wont be easy taking it on/off when you need access to the trunk.

The auction says that he found it in the trunk of a car he bought... So how did he know that it went to a 250R and how did he know that it's 2009 CT Blue as opposed to 2008 CP Blue? Hmm... It likely flew off the original owner's bike and was found and tossed in the trunk, so I can still believe it.

The part that is missing from this one is the part the people find still attached when they discover the rest missing after a ride. Considering how often it has reportedly happened, this legitimate scenario was only a matter of time. I can believe it. I do wonder if he knows for sure that it's 2009 or not...

Yeah what you guys are presenting, are quite possible. I mean, why would he sell a cover without the fitment stuff on it. Sounds like something he picked up on the street or of a bike.

Sounds about like my rubber dampers on my passenger seat. I drove it 680 miles home and had the first service done. I picked it up and noticed ants running up and down the kickstand that night. I saw them in the tail area and thought they were to blame for my missing dampers, but it turns out that Kawi didn't insert them all the way and they had been popping out, prompting the bit of glue I had noticed earlier (obviously, ineffective). After replacing them and inserting FULLY, I removed and attach me rear seat at every stop (helmet lock). 2 years and 14K miles later and they are still there. I see the dampers missing on about half of the pictures of OEM seats I see. I wouldn't doubt if these things that you had trouble with need a serious "press and spin" to fully seat like the factory rubber dampers.

with so many red flags in this transaction, I would not trust the seller. As soon as I even suspect someone is not being 100% truthful with me, I simply refuse to deal with them any further. What you do with your hard earned money is entirely up to you.

Yeah, Kawasaki definately could have done a better job with this.

I made sure to insert them fully, because i had read about it on here that the cowls were badly made. But i guess i should have secured them in another way.
The cowl also fell off once(not completely off, because i had put some velcros/strips on), but i turned the grommet the other way round and it made all the difference (thats the rear one, only 1 of those)

Guess i'll have to buy something similar to the damper and put it on, the cowl wobbles a bit around if i push on it with my fingers.

Nice to hear you still got yours.

I asked the seller to provide a picture of the underside and after a day or two he did. He stated that he thinks it is broken. I don't think he is hiding anything.
Also, it's 2010, it shouldn't take a person of average intelligence more than a few minutes to get on the internet and determine what motorcycle that part came from.

It doesn't look broken, it only appears to be missing pieces.

Indeed. I asked him if it was a 2008 or 2009 and, once he was aware that there was a difference color, he updated the auction. Sounds exactly like what a legit person from that perspective would do.

What red flags? It makes perfect sense.

Suppose I was a normal everyday cage drive and I found Delta's cowl on the side of the road and threw it in my trunk (someone likely did). Would I or anyone else I randomly give it to somehow know what year model it came from or know that it was missing parts? No. It's not immediately obvious with that level of research. The seller did enough research to see that this part was used on a 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 250R and listed it appropriately. As those in the know informed him of the particulars, he made sure to update his auction to stay 100% honest.

Sure, he isn't the original, unlucky, owner, but I don't see any red flags. The odds of getting it back to the original owner are so slim, what would you rather he do with it? Throw it away?

hey, don't get your panties in a bunch.

if you want to buy it, go ahead. I'm just saying I wouldn't based on what was posted in this thread. I saw no link to an ebay auction and I'm not about to waste my time looking for it there.

just me, but if the part's not in perfect condition, why bother buying it?

Because cowls are expensive. The missing part is only $20 new and probably cheaper if you ask someone who has lost their cowl for their remaining piece! It's currently at $30, which sounds like a deal to me... if only I had some way to know what kind of blue it is (that's the risky part).

Bump to ask (only a few hours left): Is it just missing or is it truly broken? I do not see where the screws mount.

Personally it looks broken. I can't see where you screw the bracket to in the supplied picture.
