Cutting the stock pipe

Hey guys,
I'm thinking about cutting the stock exhaust on my bike. I want it to be louder and sounds less like a sewing machine. Any thoughts, suggestions, comments?

I wouldn't cut it off. You could always take it off. The muffler will come off from the pipe, but if you want it louder why don't you just but a slip on exhaust?

I wouldn't recommend it. It is hideously loud :P, and won't help performance. But yes, you can easily just take off the muffler and leave the pipe in place to see.

I dont really want to do a slip on for two reasons 1) expensive 2) having to rejet the carb, as I have read many posts saying its a must with an aftermarket pipe

To clarify I was looking at pulling the baffles out and putting in a perforated pipe packed with fiberglass and cutting the muffler to make it shorter

It's easy to do. We cut the end off, installed a 1 1/2" baffle. Then welded it back together. Sounds real nice

Cost like 30 bucks in parts........

You don't need to rejet for a slip on, they don't flow that much better, they just make more noise.
Obnoxiously loud exhausts are triggering repressive legislation across the nation and will eventually do away with all after market exhausts.

original mufflers seem pretty cheap, i'd say get another pipe and then go to town on it. I'd warn though, chances of needing a rejet from a hacked stock can are probably just as high as from installing a slip on.

a chick hacking her pipe ... just somethin' sexy about that

Doing that with the stock exhaust would be the same as having a slip-on, and in either case while a re-jet isn't *necessary*, the exhaust might exacerbate the relatively gutless lower end of the powerband (say, 2-8k) due to it running even slightly leaner. But, from what I hear at least, you might pick up a few ponies up top.

But yeah, what you are asking has been done and if you have the fabricating skills can be a simple, cheap way to upgrade the exhaust.

Should re-Jet even with the stock pipe Getting that stock baffle out, you loose some compression braking(wife hated that). You need to cut 1/8 to a 1/4" in, so the baffle will slide out. What a butt plug that thing is

sounds like hacking up my original and buying a slip on is about the same (only difference is the $$$$), gunna bid on a LOR and if I get it for a good price I will just get that and if not looks like doctoring up the pipe!
I will let you guys know how it goes!

Just removing the intake snorkel gives the bike a nice growl. If you haven't done that yet, try it. It definitely reduces the sewing machine factor. I feel no need to mess with my exhaust.

Well I decided to go big and just do it all. I bought a LOR exhaust, factory pro stage 3 jet kit, and K&N Pod air filters. Im going to remove the air box so i dont have to deal with it if i have to readjust the carbs after re-jetting.

Next project, big boy tires!

Hope I dont break a nail!!
