Aren't brembo calipers like 500 bucks?

Any brand works.

Check the classifields for parted out bikes. For a new one it's around $229 on bike bandit.

would this change be merely for appearances?

properly maintained stock pre-gen calipers with braided stainless steel lines will give you all the braking force that the pre-gen sized tires can handle.

Parts Ninja is a guy who parts out new-gen 250s and 300s. Obviously that suggestion wouldn't be useful to you since you have a pre-gen unless it's one of the interchangeable parts.

sand them down and use caliper paint, aint no reason to break the bank for cosmetic damage.
