I hit reserve at 230 miles depending on how hard I ride.

what kind of riding do you thrive on?

Snake
June 18th, 2009, 02:33 PM
Not many twisties here so it's mainly open roads.

nate-bama
June 18th, 2009, 02:34 PM
and do you fill your tank to the top? are your roads rough like alabama's?

Snake
June 18th, 2009, 02:37 PM
Oh yea all the way to the neck...especialy if I am heading out on a trip. Set the bike on center stand and fill till it almost overflows.

nate-bama

yeah i sit on mine and give it just a little breathing room..not much though

Snake

I don't know if this is the reason that I get better mileage but I use synthetic oil.

I hit reserve at 230 miles depending on how hard I ride.

I do not understand....it is more than 300 km. How big is your tank?
Or you don't mean city riding ?

My tank is the standard 4.8 gallons and when I hit 230 it is from open road riding. No city stop and go traffic.

I hit reserve at 230 miles depending on how hard I ride.

That is where I typically flip to reserve as well for my combo around town/freeway riding.

4 gallons main, .8 reserve for america pre gen anyways

I understand... My last trip was 210 kilometers - 7.10 liters = 3.5 ltr / km
How much it this ? 67 ? I always do make a mistake with Imperial and US gallons.

But when I drive in Sofia in a heavy traffic - I hit the reserve at 250 km.

I just looked into my owners manual and 4.8 gallons = 18 literes.
1 mile = 1.6 kilometers

you will have to the rest of the math from there.

Yes, I though so... until Google calculate me a 45 MPG. Then Alex explained to me that this about Imperial gallons.

I hit reserve today at 168 miles which is obviously way below everyone else, and what it has been up until now. I thought I filled it up pretty close to the top last time. Could a new exhaust system (perhaps leaking) be responsible for a drastic drop in MPG?

sombo
June 18th, 2009, 05:27 PM
Ok, got your answer for you. 210km = 130miles and if you figure it at 4.8 gallons that's only 27mpg. Here's the site I use for conversions which is an excellent site to use.

And for your 250km part it would be about 38-39mpg.

Metric conversion. (http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/conversions.html)

Wow, I new my MPG was good, but never thought it was this good. I've been getting about 65 MPG on every tank for the past few months. :D I don't know why or what made it happen, but I hit reserve between 260 and 270 miles! I can easily get over 300 miles on one tank! :D :D Sorry if I sound braggy, I'm just excited that my bike is better than I thought.

389 kilometers / 241.71 miles , entirely open road.

I do mostly high speed interstate riding (80-90mph) and I like to juice the throttle and get in front of the cars at lights.

My city is STUPID for people not looking when they merge so I negate that effect and get in front of everyone. Plus my city is VERY stop and go.

I switch to reserve pre-emptively at 150 miles. I make sure to fill up at 200 mile mark. I normally put it 3.5-4 gallons. I don't really care about the mpgs as they are OBVIOUSLY better than the car i normally drive.

50mpg is good enough for me. I hoping the 15t will up it a little bit though.

The 15T helped my mileage out quite a bit.

Hey Snake Ive been wanting to drop my revs a bit..after going to a 15 whats the difference like launching the bike is it much slower? Im a little concerned because im like 220lbs

Alex
June 28th, 2009, 11:50 AM
I saw zero difference in mpg going from the 14-tooth to a 15-tooth on our pre-gen ninjette.

Snake
June 28th, 2009, 11:50 AM
The takeoff from a dead stop is a little bit slower but realy not very noticeable.

Obsidian
June 28th, 2009, 12:03 PM
The most I noticed for the take-off when I changed the sprocket is I have to give it just a bit more gas. She can bog down a bit easier now but it's nothing you shouldn't easily get adjusted to.

Reserve usually around 220 miles. It's a Cali bike so I fill it to the bottom of the filler neck.

Generally, around 60-63 mpg, by mental calculation...it's 93 miles round trip, I usually put in 3 gallons or less.

nate-bama
June 28th, 2009, 12:13 PM
I got 178 on my last tank 44.5 mpg
thats still better than my 351w in my f-150 lol

I don't hit reserve. I put it away in the evening with a full tank so I'm ready the next time I ride. When I'm out on a trip, I fill up between 150 and 200 miles, just to make sure I don't run out somewhere...

You should probably hit reserve every so often. Water has ways of getting in and can start accumulating in the bottom of the tank. I recommend you run with reserve once in a while if you don't normally do so...

I always fill up before I have to hit reserve, but I've gone 240 miles w/o switching. I always get 65mpg every fill, and that is about 65% city and 35% highway driving. My total commute is 50 miles in and out of Chicago and I take the highway in the morning and local roads when I leave.

If you are getting less than 55 mpg, either you are riding around in 10k rpm or maybe there is something wrong with the bike?

I'm sorry, but that doesn't make any sense to me... They both pull gas from the same tank... It's just that the reserve tube is lower in the tank then the regular tube. Are you suggesting I run the tank out of gas? And even if I did that on reserve, thus stranding myself somewhere, there would still be liquid in the tank. Even the reserve tube doesn't grab ALL the liquid from the tank... The only way to remove all liquid would be to pull the tank off of the bike and drain it...

Or am I wrong?

bobaab
July 17th, 2009, 11:18 AM
What I meant was, with the tank still full, you can switch to reserve to get rid of the small amount of water/other contaminants to pass through. This is to prevent a time when you really need to switch to RES, just to find you're sucking in mad amounts of contaminants.

You are right about the petcock...here's an article explaining what I mean:

been filling my tank on the side stand so i can try to fill to the same level every time..eased up on the hard riding a bit and im rewarded with a pretty steady 60mpg im impressed lots of hills, cant obey speed laws at all lol

I switched my last tank over to reserve at 268 and got 74.3 mpg. After 9000 miles it was the first time I've tried to net max MPG and that's the highest I've gotten by about 10mpg. I got my front 15T last week and I expect it to go up a bit since I'm cruising at 500 rpms lower now. Mostly highway riding here...usually between 60 and 70mph.

so after running larger main jets, factory pro needles, epa caps pulled + 3 turns out and K&n pod's for several months my bike averages 50 mpg..i get right at 200 miles before hitting reserve and fill up at 225-230miles..she takes about 4.3-4.5 gallons at that point

Wow, your bike is using way more gas than stock! Btw, what size tires are you on?

nate-bama
October 27th, 2009, 03:55 PM
up front.. MT 75 100/80-16 , outback..MT 75 120/80-16

my truck get's 10 mpg and the family car's get around 25, so i'm happy with 50mpg

Actually it's not using that much more. Stock from factory it's rated at about 50-70mpg. He's also made upgrades that use more gas to make more power. Mine as well has had upgrades such as jetting (not sure what jets since I didn't do the mods myself), 2 into 1 yoshi exhaust and sport demon tires. I get anywhere between 50 - 60mpg depending on how I ride.

bobaab
October 28th, 2009, 04:59 AM
My completely stock Ninja 250 consistently gets 65mpg with Kenda K671 in 130/90-16 rear; 100/90-16 front...meaning that his tires go a lesser distance per rotation. It's about a 3% difference there...if he gets 50mpg, then it's really like he's getting 48.5mpg.

Comparing that to my stock gas mileage of 65mpg and you get a difference of 16.5mpg...a whopping 25% difference. I'd call that significant...

But I'm not trying to argue here, just wanted to let you guys know how I saw it. It's still true that 50mpg is much better than...most cars :)

Alex

Riding styles have quite a bit to do with mpg on these bikes. His mileage difference may have something to do with the jetting changes, and it may have nothing to do with it. I never see close to 50 mpg on our current-gen ninjette or or pre-gen, yet my wife was able to get into the 50's and rarely into the 60's.

sombo
October 28th, 2009, 02:08 PM
As I said bob, Kawasaki rated the pre-gens straight from the factory in stock configuration at 50-70mpg. If the factory says it can be as low as 50 in stock form, then why would it seem odd when people get that even after modding?

I'm with nate-bama on this one however I just switch over to reserve even after I fill up and turn it off after I stop. At 200 miles i fill up at about 3.4 gallons.

i had'nt thought about this thread in a while so i just noticed at the start when my bike was stock i got 48 ...ridden hard , but that has'nt changed and i get 50 now with taller gears and carb bs

not to discourage anyone , because of what some may consider sub par fuel economy. I am sure if i drove it like a gentleman the 60+ would be possible

BUT what fun is that? this bike has 250cc's and if your not around 10-11.5k your making Honda Rebel power.

Not that there's anything wrong with that

I have hit the reserve on average around 250 miles. I have 15/41 gears and a tall shield, but I don't run the engine above 7-8 for very long, rarely ride close to the redline.

Before it got "cold" here in southern california (by cold I mean 50s at night, high 60s during the day) I would get between 200-215 miles to the tank. Now that its cold, I'm not hitting reserve until 240-250 miles. This is street riding, with very little freeway use too. I'm impressed.

240+ before reserve is some pretty fantastic mileage! I've never been that fortunate on a ninjette, but like you I've noticed that mileage does seem to go up a bit when it gets just a little cooler outside.

I was just as surprised as you. Granted I've been riding pretty conservatively (shifting between 7-9k rpm, haven't redined it in months). The only thing I can figure is the jetting (along with the cooler air like you said). It runs like a CHAMP in the summer, but been a little sluggish in the winter, particularly in the midrange.

I hit reserve just over 240. Does not matter how I ride either, really. I always fill up around 225 to 230 just to avoid flipping the lever while riding.

when im pinned on the throttle all the way open in higher gears and i feel it lagging, i know its RES time.
