Alan, one might think that riders buy/wearing gear based on the type of riding they plan on doing THAT day. So if you just plan on going for a nice slow cruise to the store or out to dinner then maybe the full race leathers are a bit much...
When buying gear, it boils down to 4 basic things;
Fit (most important)
Slide protection (material)
Impact protection (armor)
Comfort (warmth, coolness or stretches in the right places)
Many of my friends have the courtech overpants and swear by them. And yes... a few have crash tested them as well. While they do not offer as much slide protection as leathers, but they can be armored up quite adequately for your ride.
