personally, I use a white paint pen to prominently mark belts, cams, crank, all pertinent markings in position on both Ducatis PRIOR to any removal attempts.
Well seen marks are then on display....offers a no brainer on reassembly.
Ducati? Yup, but doesn't matter....same concept.
