Many riders use the method that Alex.s mentioned, hell I did too. I stopped using that method a while back though. It's just too easy to maul up the notches on the preload adjuster. Now I removed the rear wheel and use a large set of channel locks. Makes it easy and doesn't damage anything, I guess they don't make stuff like they used to
. But you should.... get a spanner, preferably a high quality one. You knuckles will thank you.
As far as setting it up, try running it on the 3rd notch and adjust up or down as needed.
