Helimot HI-5 Gloves
My Helimot gloves have always served me well. My most recent ones have lasted for two Iron Butt Rallies, tens of thousands miles, weather from freezing to boiling to underwater, and haven't failed me yet. But - all of the closures are much weaker (velcro), and they are starting to feel a little worn. So I took a trip with the family to see Helmut and his wife, and picked up a pair of his new "HI-5" gloves.
They are snug as a bug when new, so I need to get them soaked and then wear them for a little while. They are replacing the closures on my old pair over the next week or two, so I'll retain a solid backup pair.

I asked Helmut the same thing. He says it's an aerospace fiber made for them in Germany, with Kevlar impregnated in it. I played with a pair that were a year old and through a crash, and they felt great and looked to hold up well. I was going to just go with the same Buffalo Pro's that I've had a few of, but these were interesting.

They are made of a heat retardant material that happens to only come in black. It's abrasive resistant like leather but doesn't let heat pass through, It's super flexible which preserves your dexterity bot doesn't stretch. The material is designed for another application but Helmut just happened upon it while looking at other stuff I thought it could be useful for moto gloves. The idea of the HI-5 it the upper material won't stretch over time and wear out like leather. Due to it's heat blocking property's during those super hot sunny day the gloves won't get hot like normal black leather gloves.
I've been using the HI-5's for about 8 months now and love the new more supple feel compared to the 100% leather gloves. I've used them in temps between 45-117degs and they have been great. When I expect it to get colder the 50degs for extended trips I'll still pack my gerbing heated gloves because unlike Alex I don't have heated grips. Don't let the price scare you away. Aside from you crashing at over 100mph and dragging your hands across the ground the whole way, these gloves will probably outlast you. |

Interesting, I'm assuming it's waterproof but more breathable than leather?

It's not waterproof without some kind of secondary waterproofing coating and from what I can tell it's not meant to be any more breathable then leather but then I don't really pay much attention to the breeze on my hands. Maybe Alex has a better opinion on the breathability of the new material.

These gloves are badasssssssssssss. Tried some on when Rojo took me to visit Helimot and his shop. What a cool little place!
They're a little out of my price range now but the work he does (his old suits are on display) is absolutely beautiful and these gloves are super duper soft and comfy. I tried them on and he first thing I asked was, "...and these hold up on a crash?? They're so soft!" Jason swears by them. |
