Another addition to the wall of shame

Link to original page on YouTube.

Thats me about an hour and a half ago..

@Jiggles for his compilation

My second crash in two and a half months and it was exactly at the same traffic roundabout.. something about the roundabout - maybe I should just get down and walk around it..

Looks like the white paint to me. Was it raining the night before, and still slick? Takes surprisingly little throttle to break the rear loose with a little lean angle when on the paint.

White paint for sure and it looks like the front went first but I'm not on the bike so it's hard to tell from the video.

After rain the asphalts traction can be surprisingly good and the same cant be said for paint lines. I treat cold paint lines like there are all glazed with ice.

Is it just me, or does it seem like our area has been seeing more crashes than most in recent times (at least ninjette crashes). Can we change this, please!?

Really amazing !!

I am sorry about both falls.

I hope the damage to the bike and yourself has been minimal.

Check if those pavement marks are paint or glued plastic; the last one is extremely slippery.

Were you accelerating or braking?

Maybe too fast for the temperature of the tires; you missed an opportunity to warm them up with heavy braking at that stop sign that you rolled.

Best !

Sucks to hear jp. Hope you and the bike are in good shape.

It does look like the white strip was a bit too slippery.

BTW, you do take that short road a bit quick if i remember correctly from the Ocean City ride.

You just might be too quick for those strips with that lean angle and cold tires!

Good luck.

Damn that sucks!! Looks like that road was pretty slick from the looks of the GoPro laying on the asphalt. Next time just take it slower.

The Roads were looking slick and wet. and I thought I was very careful as I took the roundabout turn slowly and gingerly than my normal ride..

. I didnt realise the paint strips can be slippery.. The rear went first for sure. and I was thinking even as it went - **** was I leaning that much?. It didnt strike me if it could be the paint strips that caused it..

Bike has more scratches to the fairing, broken indicator lamp (Can be fixed).. scratched pipe, damaged brake pedal (can be fixed easily).. scratched brake lever and handle end..

Rider - slight glove rash on my left hand thumb , torn trousers (had freezeouts underneath).. some pulled muscles..

I felt the Helmet plant itself against the asphalt with a thud - so I am going to need a new one.. the visor attachment system broke on it as well..

So new gloves, new Helmet.

Yup. The roads are made to absorb moisture, and leave a reasonable amount of traction. The paint on the roads prevents much (if any) of the water from seeping into the pavement, and it sits on top of the paint waiting for unsuspecting motorcyclists. Glad you weren't banged up too badly.

When you encounter lines like this in the future, make sure that the bike is as straight up and down as possible before you get to them, and have no sudden control inputs, whether steering, braking, or acceleration; until you get to the other side of them.

In order to have a better idea about the huge difference of grip, stop over there after any rain, dismount and twist your foot and shoe (rubber sole) over the pavement and then, over the white strip.

Same applies to iron or steel surfaces, such like manholes and rail roads.

Tough break, could have happened to anyone. I find it hard to gauge traction when roads are slightly wet and tend to air on the side of caution but the walkway strips are the kicker, those things are trouble.

It's really hard for me to get a feel for what happened in that video and why you went down.

It looks like you were going pretty fast into that bend... like 40MPH?

Hopefully this wont put you off riding in the wet. I hammer around on my ninjette in the wet. I barely adjust my riding compared to how I ride in the dry. I tend to just not lean quite so far, leave slightly bigger stopping distances and (like others have said) treat metal and painted surfaces like they're an ice rink. Otherwise though I feel planted.

During our equivalent of the MSF my instructors tell us what to look out for and how to treat the road when it's wet. They all told me that I don't need to worry about it... just slippy paint and drain covers. It's always wet over here so we have to make the best of it!

Glad you're ok.

Edit: Oh... I don't think anyone has mentioned that: the first day it rains after a period of dry, the roads can be really slippy. All the dust and dirt on the road terms into a slippery grime - my dad was always warning me about that when I first learnt to drive. I take it really easy on days like that.

Oh: and leaves... watch out for the autumn leaves. They may look pretty, but they're evil plotting things that have a sick and twisted desire to turn motorcycles into surf boards.

I have ridden in wet weather before - even when it was pouring cats and dogs.
But I missed the memo on the cross walk paths and on paint lines when wet- I should have been extra careful . i count myself lucky that I could walk / ride away from there.

Things I could have done right.

1. Make the tyres more warmer
2. Do the roundabout a bit slower and more upright.
3. Slow down for that cross path/go between the lines.
4. Wear the protective kneepads under the trousers (Which I didnt today - nothing bad happened but still...)
5. Know about this stuff on paintstripes and cross walks - I admit (foolishly) that I didnt give it much importance till today
6. Record the movie at 60fps

Things I did right
1) ATTGATT
2) Record the ride at whatever fps I could..

This is good enough reason for me to stick to the 250.. No R6 for me yet...

Sorry about your low side. May I suggest that an early apex contributed to the accident? The line you took forced a tight radius towards the late part of the turn which is where the paint was. If you late apex in the future you will be more upright over the paint.

Avoidance during wet times should be the first choice. Just like track riders avoid the painted rumble strips in the wet. Is there room to ride between the painted areas?

Maintain.... Don't try any funny business with braking or throttle while riding over it. Just be loose, be smooth and as straight up as possible.

Best wishes.
