attempted theft

of my bike in the parking lot of my hotel. Went to go for a ride after work, and found this.

IMG_0144.jpg

I hope there is a special place in h*&l for people who mess around with other peoples bikes.

Anybody had to have the switch replaced on a '08 or about how much is it going to set me back?

Sounds like you may have to invest in an alarm for the bike.

+1...or even that little disc lock with an alarm built into it. The Xena disc lock/alarm i bought is sensitive as hell. The wind will set it off

It'll keep random morons off your bike.

My bike has an alarm, it got disconnected a while ago and I didn't really think about hooking it back up. But it is now.

Replacement switch is $106.01
http://www.ronayers.com/Search/N/687...5144/Source/KA

Lock set is $233.86 if you want one key for everything.
http://www.ronayers.com/Search/N/687...5390/Source/KA

You need a special tool to remove the ignition switch as it uses anti-theft bolts to hold it on.

Damn, Chris, that's horrible.

Anyone know if there's an accessory that has, say, a steel plate over the ignition with a lock holding it in place?

I'd have my bike locked in a bank-grade safe if I could haul one around with me.

Take old lock and new lock to a locksmith (along with both keys), they should be able to swap the tumblers from the old lock into the new lock and you are back to a single key. You might be able to do this yourself but I won't promise it without having the lock in my hand.

A big long heavy cable and lock might be an idea for when it is parked there. Thread it through the frame and wheels and around the fork (over the triple tree) so that they know they need to pick the bike up to steal it or cut the cable. If it is safe at work you only need it when you are at the hotel and can keep the lock inside when you are riding.

And if work is paying for the hotel, would they pay to rent you a place in a better area?

I'd mention the problem to the hotel. Make a big fuss and see if they will give you some free stuff. If it is a major chain, they will probably give your frequent traveler points as compensation. You could earn yourself a nice free weekend for their lack of security.

I am not sure if this would work because it has never been tested. I bought a Yale disc shaped lock at our local hardware. It locks perfectly to the front brake disc and the hasp is situated in such a way that a bolt cutter would be of no use. A lanyard is attached to the lock with a red plastic luggage tag which is wrapped around the handlebar and resting on the ignition lock. It should discourage a potential thief. The lock, which appears to be Stainless, cost $13.

The downside is that you will have to have the dealership change out the ignition because there is a special kind of nut holding the ignition in. So depending on the dealership labor it might be cheaper to claim it as it is comp not collision you probably have a low deductible.

Hotels usually have good security cams in their parking lots. You may be able to find out who the person was. Hotels also have good insurance.

If that is a key broken off in the lock you may be able to loosen it up with some WD40 or Teflon spray and jiggle it and pull it out with a small forceps if you can grab it. Or glue something to it with a drop of Crazy Glue and try and pull it out. But don't drip any glue down the lock hole or you're really screwed.
Or are we looking at the lock tumblers and springs broken off in there?

Got the piece that was stuck in there out, it was the tip of a screwdriver. Key didn't fit at first, but I played with it, held my mouth right and it worked. So my bike is now rideable, and I moved it to the front of the hotel under my window. Got a traffic cone that was sitting next to the main entrance and put it in front of a spot. Maybe I will be able to keep that one for bikes only. Checked one of the bike shops here and the cost of a new one was 140 -150, with labor about 100 more, plus 6 -10 days for it to be ordered. geez. 2wheelguy found one for 106 and another place I looked was 96 or so. Going to look around a bit before I commit.

I talked to the manager earlier today and she looked at the security cam tapes for that night and said there wasn't anyone on there messing with it. I'm wondering if someone did that during the day.

Thanks to all

hmm, that is an idea. How big was the lock? Did the luggage tag come with it or was it something that you added?

You are soooooo lucky! This happened to me two weeks ago and I'm still waiting on my new ignition switch to get here.

Sigh...10 seconds for some moron to render my bike inoperable and probably the better part of an afternoon plus over $100 for me to fix it.

That sucks! Personally I'm more afraid of my bike just being thrown into a van(I understand it's very common in SoFlo) on account of it being so small. Two big guys could easily lift it. I hear they even snatch liter bikes like nothing, they throw a mattress in the van, and drive around looking for loot. I always chain it to something solid, but I figure if they have a van, they have bolt cutters too.

I would get a room on the mainfloor at a hotel/motel where you have your own door to go outside and can bring your bike inside your room so this would not happen again. I would definitely report this to the hotel and see if they would pay for the damages and if they have security cameras and try to see if it was caught on tape.

Chris, The lock is made by Yale and is 3" in diameter. It is round and made of Stainless. I made my own lanyard with nylon line with a key ring on each end. I had a plastic luggage tag lying around and covered it with red tape. The lock fits perfectly into one of the holes on the disc brake. I lock the key ring in with the lock and display the red tag next to the ignition for two reasons: 1)A potential thief will notice it and follow the line to the lock 2) It reminds me not to ride off with the lock in place should I have a Senior Moment. Check it out. It looked like some cheap security to me.

Please excuse me while I hijack your thread =o I was out taking my bike apart in preparation, trying to remove the triple clamp and looking at this writeup: How to replace the ignition switch

In the first picture here I circled where one of the security bolts is that connects the ignition switch to the triple clamp. The second picture is really my problem though...I can't remove the triple clamp because of this wtf-little-rod that's connecting the ignition switch to the tree underneath the clamp. There's no mention of this in the above writeup, any ideas about this?

Also if anyone can comment as to why the writeup instructs you to remove the gas tank, I don't see any reason for this so far...

K just realized that little rod is the locking mechanism for the handlebars...so how are you supposed to replace the ignition switch if it was locked when someone broke it with a screwdriver?

Not to derail this line of conversation, but I can't seem to find how to replace the ignition switch anywhere in the FSM....

I'd say that's pretty bad (too bad the FSM doesn't have a index).
