Needles and Clips

Currently I have Factory Pro needles with clips in the third position from the top. I put a few washers on top of that clip and another clip at the top position as it said in the instructions.

The bike seems to run fine, does that sandwich of clips and washers actually do anything? Seems to me that only the bottom clip would affect anything, what is the purpose of having the stack of washers and clip on top of it?

They do nothing when above the needle. But... if/when you need to fine tune a bit more, where are the washers? Yep! Right there where you left them.
