New Ninja 300 and max cs sprocket enquiry

hello everyone,

I'm the new owner of a new white Ninja 300! It will keep my 250R racebike company in the carport ;-) and I actually traded my 2010 R1 for it.

Have got a list of obligatory upgrades to work on while (patiently) breaking the motor in but updating the final drive ratio is a priority... apparently it is very popular to do so!

And having searched the threads, I've not found an answer to a simple enquiry:

What is the largest countershaft sprocket that will fit in the Ninja 300? I know that a 15T works but will a 16T or even 17T fit?

While I realize that's a major increase in final drive ratio, I'd like to point out that I weigh less than 42 kg (about 95 lbs.) and bumping the ratio on my 250R over 15% worked fine when it was a streetbike.

many thanks in advance!

Robert

Lol! My weight varies between 42-47 kg (95-105 lbs) but I'm at the low end currently. FWIW, I'm 155 cm (5' 1") tall so that goes a long way in explaining the weight ;-)

Another member here (I forget who... ) went 15/39 on his 300 and said it still felt fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe the speedo on the 300 is not based on the front wheel speed like on the 250R. Members have reported that doing 15/42 on the 300 makes their speedometer nearly perfect. Going with taller gearing would make your speedo read low. I'd rather have it read high than low.

Good to hear 15/39 (+15.4%) works fine. I see that JT steel JTR486 is available in 38T as well which would result in +18.4% with a 15T CS sprocket.

I realize that the speedo reading will be affected but I'll be fine once I've compared it to a known-accurate source.

Still would like to know whether a 16T will fit though...

many thanks!

i believe it would fit like in a 250, you might want to modify the sprocket cover a little

I'm 5' 7'' and weigh between 95-100 and 15/42 work perfectly for me. P.S. unlike most with the 15 tooth mine is +2 instead of dead on.

hello again,

Just an update on the Ninja 300 countershaft sprocket size issue:

A 16T will not fit.

I'm running the 15T without the sprocket cover as I still have to cut it so the reversed clevis will clear (I'm doing GP shift).

I'm still breaking in the bike and have got 75 miles to go 15/38 is +18% and still pulls fine from first gear, at least with a 100 lbs. rider. The chain is short enough that this works though the adjusters are less than 3 notches from the back of the swingarm.

Will offer another report once I can wind it out past 6 krpm...

I'm planning on buying a 15t sprocket, can anyone confirm what pitch I would need for my stock chain?

hello everyone,

Final update and report: 15/38 works great, at least for a 100 lbs. rider ;-) Top speed is still achieved in fifth gear (which is the same as sixth with a normal final drive ratio) because of the power deficit but highway cruising is far more comfortable at +18%.

I used a product (`Speedo Healer') to correct the speed sensor signal from the countershaft sprocket to compensate for the revised final drive ratio. It isn't inexpensive (~130 USD w/ cable) but is certainly convenient.

@psych0hans - our bikes use a standard 520 chain which has a 5/8" pitch.
