Tracking a Daily Driver

So I'm curious if this is as bad of an idea as my gut is saying.
My Ninja is pretty much my daily driver. I have a 80+ daily commute during the week. But I really want to go to the track, and don't have money for a race bike at this time.
Would taking my daily driver to the track be a horrible idea? Anyone else do this? Thoughts? I'm a little worried I may wreck it or something, or that the track will mean more long-term damage.

The track isn't going to cause any more mechanical wear on the bike. But yes, there is a chance of putting it on its side. There's always a chance of that on the street, as well, of course. What are your options if you do destroy the bike?

Possibly drive my somewhat unreliable, old car. But it eats more gas, costs more than double to park on campus ($35 a month vs $81 a month), and takes way longer with traffic and stuff. And this is presuming it works...

If it was my ONLY ride, I might be worried. Although , track downs usually cause less damage than going down on the street.

Most simple track downs are lowsides and if that happens its normally a bent handlebar and cosmetics. So if did go down it would only be a couple of days at most before she was sound to commute on if need be.

I say if your confident in understanding your own limits then go for it, track riding is safer then road riding any day.

I track my daily all the time. The fairings tell the stories lol! the most common things that break or get damage are your rearset brackets, bending or breaking your handle bars, clip-ons are a plus in this situation, and busting your front blinkers if you still have them on You'll bend your shifter too and/or possibly rear brake lever Levers may bend too. fairing rash is inevitable and same for your exhaust. Also, I don't have sliders. If I did, my damages may have been minimal but YMMV. I was able to ride off the track with broken stuff.

but like said, just be easy and dont push yourself over your riding skills.

Most insurance companies will still cover you if you crash on a track as long as it's not a timed event such as a race. Call them to verify your coverage.

I just called my insurance provider, Progressive, and they said that as long as it's just a track day that I am covered. Look into the accessory coverage too because mine covers gear under that umbrella. Just my $.02.

This is a decision that is best answered by how prepared you are with a sprinkle of personal preference.

Check your insurance policy. - ^^^ done!
Have a plan b ready and in place before you hit the track. (ride to work, ect... ect..)
Remove any and all hard parts that are not required to ride track. If it's not there.... you can't break it.
Ride at 80% or lower of your skill level.
Remember that you share the track with others and an event that causes you to go down/offtrack may not be because of your error.

Go with an educational mindset instead of a racer mindset. What do you want to get out of going to the track?

So basically, I should be fine as long as I don't push myself too hard?

Wouldn't I be better off investing in a race bike at that point, though? Granted, I'd probably be more used to the set-up if all that stuff is also on my daily driver.

Well, I knew I wanted to go to the track when I bought my bike. At the moment, my primary objective is to build handling skills (which I know may not translate to street driving, since I'm hyper-cautious there). I also want to have fun, and learn about working on my bike.

As long as you can keep your ego in check and keep from having to many oh **** moments you'll be fine. Remember to rest, eat, and hydrate between sessions. Momentary loss of focus do to fatigue is the #1 culprit for those afternoon session mishaps.

Being smooth in your line choices and not worrying about what's behind you will make you predictable and easier for other riders to safely pass you if need be.

Be a sponge. Learn as much as you possibly can, and enjoy the time on the track. Remember that it's not a race, and the intent is to learn and improve, not make a new PR every lap.

i voted for heck no before i read the title. I still will keep my vote no if a bike was really your DD and only form of transportation. If you have other means just in case something happens then have at it. I bought my 1000 and plan on tracking my 250, but i still plan on commuting with the 250 most of the time. In the chance that i do crash though, i have another way to get around, so its ok.

And as long as progressive covers track days, i will more than likely bring the 1000 to the track once or twice

And the boost in confidence will be the biggest skill that will transfer to street riding. Even if that is the only thing..... your still a winner.

So have I. It was back when you had to have a racing license to get on the track however; at Loudon they let everyone on the track together (cars and bikes). A Formula V puked out his exhaust pipe in front of me and I took a dixie. I was on a brand new XR-1000 and I was pissed. It came real close to fistycuffs in the pits. Bikes are faster than cars at the old Loudon. I learned my lesson and that's when I learned the technique of waiting in the pits untill the first guy comes around before I go out. This way I have an open track for a few laps.

yikes! wish i could blame my track-day crash on someone else. purely my own fault. spent tires, crap line through a turn, and overloading the front with a chicken gas-hand. at our local club they make 3 precalls before each session so i head out a few minutes earlier than everyone else so i can start the session in front... the fast guys go by eventually but theres not as much traffic to get by until it starts spreading out a bit more, but by then the session is almost over anyway

I'll be tracking my DD this season as well. My reasoning is like this: I don't plan to push it much harder than I do in the mountains. And in the mountains, there is traffic, animals, gravel, and god-knows-what. Might I crash? Of course, but I don't take it to be so much more likely than crashing the way I normally ride when I go out. Maybe less.

Good luck.

get frame sliders and you'll be ok...
When I was at the track I was the only rider to keep riding after my crash despite no sliders because I was on the 250. All the guys on supersports were going stupid fast and when they went down their bikes got real mangled.

Roll the dice with frame sliders. Some say they do more harm than good.

frame sliders on the 250 are a bad idea IMO

yamaha? better get as many sliders as you can.

I wish. They aren't that cheap in California. Also, I dunno how my folks would feel about two bikes in the garage. They already are sketchy about me being on two wheels with a motor in the first place.

Working on both of those. I have decent gear for street, sans back protection, but my tires are completely stock. Also, I need to get a track suit. I'm at the point where I've more or less given up on finding a secondhand one that fits me.

I'm 5'2" or 5'3" and sub 110 in weight. Thanks for the offer, but I'm doubtful I'd fit the suits.

Maybe? I dunno. I'm going to go try on suits at the Dainese store in Costa Mesa to see if I can get a better feel for my sizing.

I'm jealous of all you people who have motorcycle dealerships who stock leathers. If I want to try stuff on, I need to go to freakin 2 hours away. I might do that over spring break because I want a suit that actually fits.

I only know of one in my area(ish) that isn't a cyclegear/supposedly stocks stuff in my size. Have yet to actually see anything in my size on the shelves though.
