MotoGP at Laguna Seca - 2012

Heading out in the morning for another fun weekend in Monterey. Weather looks good, massages & dinners booked, and both little monsters in the care of their grandmother. Annie and I are going to have a fun weekend! If any other ninjette folks will be there, I'll try to remember to wear a ninjette.org t-shirt on Sunday (raceday). Hope to see some of you there!

MotoGP is so overrated. The riders are good but I feel if they didn't have such cool names they would be no different than you or me in riding. It's all in the machine!

Perfect example; Bradl riding down Lombard St. How slow can you go. Last time I was in San Fran I did it in a rental at three times his speed and people weren't just standing on the side of the road in silence they were screaming and yelling at me, cheering me on.

Ran into Valentino last night! We were coming back to the hotel when he and some friends were just going out. Annie said "OMG - Valentino!" in what she thought was her inside voice, but no, it wasn't. He smiled and said hi to her.

I never knew Moto2 and Moto3 didn't run at Laguna Seca until late last night. Do you feel jipped (for lack of a better word)? I would be upset if I paid all of that money just to see MotoGP. I love MotoGP and all of the riders are amazing but I would say three races vs one would feel like money well spent.

That is so neat that you ran into Valentino!

Laguna has always been a combined weekend for the world classes and the american classes, even back when it was a WSBK race instead of a GP race. Since 2005, it's been a GP race + an AMA weekend, so the track time is pretty packed. There is the MotoGP class (3 free practices, qualifying, and the race); plus 3 AMA classes (American Superbike, Daytona Sportbike, and Supersport). They also did the FIM electric bike race here (I think this is the third year they've had it), but that was only 1 warmup then a relatively short race. There just wouldn't be time in a 3 day weekend to also fit in the Moto2 & Moto3 classes. (link to the race schedule) Would I prefer them over the AMA if I had the choice? Probably, I do enjoy watching those classes on TV. But to be honest, the GP race itself was the worst race of the weekend to watch, in terms of anything interesting happening and the results not being predictable days in advance. Supersport had the winners decided by thousandths of a second on a great drive out of the last corner. Sportbike was pretty close. And American Superbike was a runaway for #1, but the race for second was quite interesting, and also not decided until a few feet before the finish line. THe GP riders are the best in the world, buit the combination of the equipment rules, tire rules, and relative inequity in investment across the manufacturers means that the results are almost boringly predictable.

Oh - and it looks like Rossi could have used a little more sleep today.

I thought it was 57 degrees. It looks like it must have been warmer.

A little chilly and cool in the mornings until the fog burns off. Then in the 70's during the afternoon. This was from qualifying on Saturday, run from 2 - 3 PM or so.

I knew we should have checked the forum!! We were there the whole weekend and stayed in the downtown area.

Our daughter had gotten married two weeks prior, so we were a little out of sync with "the rest of the world".
