Thinking about trading the car for another bike.
So I bought a 2012 Mustang GT and have done some light modding to it. Chip, CAI, exhaust, lowered, full short shifter. I've been a car guy forever and I love this car but ever since I started riding bikes driving the cage, even this one, has become less and less fun. Lately I can't get the idea out of my head to get rid of the car and add another bike to the stable. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to have both. There's a limit to the toys the wife will let me have
Lately I've really been considering selling the car and adding a new S1000RR to the stable. It would save me money each month, the insurance is about the same on it as the car and obviously gas is still better. I will still have an SUV between me and the wife, but that's really her car. So I would be left with just 2 bikes for my main transportation. I still love the idea since it would force me to ride even more and I love riding. What do you guys think? Pic for reference |

i know people who ride year round in the worst weather in all conditions. i dont get any snow/much ice but i still ride in the rain and hail i do get... with good poor weather gear its not that bad, really. and if the wife has a car to do the shopping in, what more do you need?

I can say I worked with a guy that only owned a bike and obviously rode it everyday year round. He said the snow isn't even that bad, you just ride with your feet down a lot. I know the few times I rode in the snow on my dirt bikes they weren't very fun...though I like riding them during the winter in general
I actually rode to work last week in light rain and it wasn't really fun, but wasn't completely horrible either. |

Maybe you need to get a new car, a car similar to the Ninja 250 that requires more driver involvement. One that isn't particularly fast (and on today's roads how fast can one really go?), but keep your speed up in the corners, and it will reward the driver. Despite the stereotypes of the general populace, a Miata is very well-regarded by auto-x drivers. A S2000? Or wait for the new Toyobaru, the much ballyhooed return of the "driver's car"?
To that end, I will drive down to Virginia and take your Mustang off your hands. I'll do it just for you... |

No offence to anyone or anything. I even support the OP in going all bike but just trying to add a bit of realism too.
For example, I road my bike home from the dentist one time after a root canal and the wife had to work and couldn't give me a ride home. It sucked hard.... Or maybe going to that wedding 3 hours away where you don't really wanna arrive wet, even hey can you pick up these 10 (heavier) boxes for me? Trust me, it's not really as sexy as it sounds to have a bike(s) only... no matter where you live or really how old you are. There are just times and stuff you just can't do on a bike ya know..... If you willing to accept the pro's and cons. Then I wish OP and everyone else that is ALL bike the best of luck. I wish I could do it but it's not in my nature. EDIT: Having 4 kids pretty much seals the deal for me anyway....

Ahh the S1000RR is sexy as F***!!!!
I would say.... get rid of the Stang and get the BMW. If you later decide that you really need a car get a cheap, reliable used car. |

Chris, if his wife didn't have the SUV then I would agree with you. I commute a lot on my bike but sometimes it simply isn't feasible. I have a child myself and a car is invaluable in getting from point A to point B when multiple people are involved. Hell, things like grocery shopping are pretty important if you want to eat, and while I don't buy much, I buy enough on my once a week trip that I would need to have a bike other than a sportbike or at the very least, use a tank bag and a backpack to get all of my items home.
Given the OP's situation, however, I think a second bike makes plenty of sense for him. Though I would personally by a cheap beater car for those really awful weather days that are dangerous to be on a bike.

I hate to say it but your gonna need a cage. I had to use my car to pick up dog food and some dirt for my house plants. Cant do that on a bike really. |

I think I'm gonna put it for sale. I still have the suv between us so when we go anywhere or shopping we have that. I will only mainly have to ride the bikes to work so she can have the cage at home. But if it's snowing she can stay home till I get back from work with the car lol. |

I don't mind the headlights all that much because I wouldn't be able to see them while riding anyway . But BMW normally makes such beautiful vehicles I assume there has to be a reason behind the headlights but I haven't been able to find one.

I still think with the weather around these parts I wouldn't do it, but that's me.
We've also had to to leave my wife's car at the shop over night, would your wife like riding on the back of your bike in the rain or cold? My wife ran out of gas today (stupid a$$) and if I needed to take her gas it wouldn't have been easy on my bike. Just stupid, unexpected things that can make a "bike only" life inconvenient. |

Bike only 1yr next week, but it does help that I have a 4 wheeled wife. That has never had anything to do with my commute. Her car has only come into play in weekend grocery shopping and what not. To be quite honest, we do a lot of that on one of the bikes as well.

From my point of view it looks like your just trading one toy with a little usefulness for another with no really useful aspects. Don’t be fooled, you’re not going to save money. Right now you’re commuting on a ninja witch beats both the stang and the 1000 in gas and maintenance cost. There is really nothing you ‘need’ the 1000 for as the ninja does it already, albeit a bit slower =P
There is nothing rational about getting another bike but as long as you can accept that, afford the bike and have fun riding GO FOR IT

Drop the ninja and get a dual sport to go with the bimmer. Ride the dual on inclimate days.
I'd love to follow your path, but back country snowboarding is a passion of mine and I'm not riding in fresh snow with a snowboard on my back. If I lived farther from the city I could drop the car and get a sled, but I live in the city. |

i feel the same with with my genesis coupe. when i got it, it was the world to me. i couldn't stop staring at it, driving it, cleaning it..and now i'm sick of it. it feels like a dump truck compared to the ninja, and it's boring. it's bad on gas, it's expensive to maintain (oil changes..costly tires..etc.), hard to work on, and it's just a drag now. but i can't give it up because if i need to carry a lot of things from my hometown to my apartment, i need a trunk/backseats.
and yes, i love snowboarding too, and that would be a feat to get the gear up a mountain on a bike lol. i'd have to like, rent a jeep everytime i went! |
