tire sizes
I have been offered a set of Pirelli Rosso II's for my 01 ZZR 250; the only thing is that they are quite a bit bigger than what I'm running on now. Currently I have a Pirelli Sport Demon 140/70/17 rear and an IRC Eagle Grip 100/80/17 front. The Rosso II's are 150/60/17 rear and 120/70/17 front. Has anyone ever ran this combination ?

Stock front on the NewGen is 110/70, and 120/70 is a common alternate. The stock rear is 130/70, and 140/70 isn't uncommon. I have a 150/60, but I'm running a wider aftermarket wheel. If you get too big a tire, the narrow rim pinches it and alters the profile (which can result in less contact).

It's late so can someone refresh my memory on the wheel sizes on the zzr? 16's or 17's? Because I don't think they make rosso II's in 16's if that is what your running.

I thought the ZZR had the same wheel sizes as the new-gen 250 (so could take the same tire sizes). Not sure what the front fender clearance is though, if the oversize 120/70 would work without rubbing.

ZZR front is the same as new gen 250' but rear is 4" with a 140 section tyre. I have this in my modified bike & plan to fit a 150/60 when the rear needs replacing.
Visit here to check what wheel/tyre/rim width is recommended http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle. Avon are the only people that publish this, but should apply to most other manufacturers tyres. Pick a tyre then check the chart. Have fun |

Are you sure? All of the specs I've ever seen have the rear wheel at 3.5" for the ZZR, just like the 2008-2012 250. Kawi only went to a 4" wide rear wheel in 2013 for the Ninja 300 (or that same-gen 250 in some markets). That said, plenty of folks have put a 150/60 on the 3.5" wheel on the 250, so it's likely to work on the ZZR as well.

Doh you are correct, the original ZZR250 wheel is 3.5" I just checked. I have replaced it with a VTR250 rear to match the KR1-S 5 spoke front as I have a KR1-S frontend on mine, the VTR wheel is 4" !

My brother has that size combo on his pregen and clearance is not an issue. He did raise the front fender to clear the front but rear was fine. He is also coming from 16" originally so your fender height may already clear.

How does it handle ? that's the big issue. I've heard that they become less flickable and harder to turn in but more stable when leaned over.

i will be able to give a full report after memorial weekend at the track. Initial feed back is they are going to be outstanding.
I am running 120/70r17 and 150/60 on rear. They are Michelin pp2ct's. They fit like on the rim and look like they belong. Not odd shaped or pinching. They don't seem to be slouching on flickability. But im also coming from monster truck tires on 16" wheels. I was running 130/90 on rear and 110/90 on the front. I had to raise the front fender with the 16's. Seat of the pants they feel smoother than the bias ply sport demons. |
