Recall Question

The previous owner of my 04 Ninjette punched a hole through the fuel tank with one of the fairing bolts, as it seems everyone does with these bikes. I just found out that Kawasaki issued a recall for this and my bike's VIN qualifies for the recall.

My question is: If the previous owner already tried to fix the problem using JB Weld, does that void the recall somehow? Can I still take it into a dealer and have them fix it or will they tell me to go pound sand?

Worth a shot to see if they will fix it. Worse they can say is no.

Called them today and it looks like I'll be getting a new tank soon.

This info should really be a sticky somewhere on here (maybe it already is?). I had no idea the recall even existed until I ran across someone mentioning it on another forum.

With as common of a problem as this is on our bikes, I bet more than a few members here have bought new tanks or paid to have theirs fixed unnecessarily.

Well crap...

Took my bike over to the dealer today and they said they can't do anything about the tank because the bike was dropped by the previous owner (the leak is on the left, the drop was on the right, mind you). But they basically said that if there's any damage at all besides the leaky tank, Kawasaki will refuse to honor the recall. So that sucks. I guess it's time to start looking around for a welder that can fix a leaky tank!

They should fix it no matter what.
Its a dangerous condition that was preexisting.

Press them to do it. Or try another dealer.

Recalls supercede any existing or subsequent damage. Call Kawasaki and get after the dealer or go to a new dealer. Call the TV news people and see if they will do a story on it. Last resort, call a lawyer.

Hmmm well now you guys are giving me something to think about. I'll give Kawasaki a call on Monday and see what they have to say. Thanks for pointing that out!

Was the tank leaking when the bike was purchased new? If not I wouldn't fancy your chances of a replacement.

I believe that the recall is only for certain 2004-2007 models, but you could always look up your VIN to see if it's listed for you. Check it out here:

I'm not sure, actually. I'm the second owner of the bike and when I bought it, the girl didn't tell me how the hole got there. She just said that there was a hole in the gas tank and it was leaking so she tried patching it with JB Weld. That didn't work so she got a longer screw to put in there to act as a plug.

I wanted to check in with you and see if you got a replacement tank. I am in the same situation now where I used jb weld to put a stud in place to try to seal the tank before i found information on the recall. I figure if that messes with the recall I can drill it out before bringing the bike in. Obviously I want to avoid doing this though if I don't have too.

I called the dealer and they said I had to bring the whole bike in to get inspected to determine if it needs a new tank. Wish they could just order me a new one so I didnt have to put the thing back together and transport it over there. The bike has been down in the past and there are some scratches on the exhaust. Is also a Salvage rebuilt title. I hope this doesn't effect the recall. It checked out on kawasakis vin check. Any feedback from you guys or anyone else that has gone through the process is appreciated!

Been a while but wanted to post an update for the sake of anyone else looking for information. I brought the bike into a shop that was a registered kawasaki dealer/service dept. (Has to be one of these cant be a shop that just happens to have some kawasaki's as they need to process the recall through corporate) Anyways they took it in and checked the vin and believe had to send pictures to kawasaki, i heard mention of this but was never confirmed. Once things checked out with kawi they had a tank ordered for me which took a good amount of time to track one down since these bikes haven't been made in 8 years now. Tank finally came in along with new hardware, they installed it and I was able to pick it up afterwards free of charge Took just over a month overall but like i said i think the majority of the time was waiting for kawi to find a tank and getting it to the shop doing the work. Pleased with the experience overall and a lesson to everyone be careful with those fairing to tank bolts!
