Made some changes, now won't start.

Had a coolant leak; tightened the clamp. Leak gone. Since I had the tank off, I decided to go from two washers to one washer. Synced the carbs and ran fine.

Started it up later that day for a ride. It started up right away, slowly moved the choke off and it would die. Set the choke on and started again. The same happened. Eventually it would idle low (2000 rpm) at full choke. Now will not start at all. At first I thought I wasn't getting fuel to the carbs, but lines were routed correctly and nothing trapped in the fuel filter.

Went back to 2 washers just in case that was the problem; still won't start. I already checked the seals on the diaphragms over and over. Can't figure out why it's not starting!!!

All the gas lines and vent lines hooked up properly on the tank? No lines kinked? Petcock valve for gas is on on position?

Basics yo.

Carb bowls filling? If not recheck your hoes to the petcock from the tank, since you had it off. How is the airbox? Battery good and charged?

I hooked everything up as usual. T started up fine, I even checked the sync. Reved it up a few times and it did well. Let it sit for a while. Started up fine, then slowly let off the choke and it just shut off. Like I said, after a while, I would only have a low idle at full choke, now it won't start. Haven't drained the carbs to check if it has any fuel. Petcock seems to be working just fine. Battery on the trickle overnight, if that's the use.

Sounds like you messed up the flow of fuel that's why it ran for awhile and now it empty and won't run. The bike with run on the fuel that's left in the carbs without a tank for like 4-5 mins.

I'll check in the morning. That's what I was suspecting since it ran good then started dying. My concern is when I started brining the choke down, it would just die.

Hoses to the Petcock only fit a certain way. Is there supposed to be a hose connected to the "vent tube" where the fuel gauge wire is at? Or does it just stay like that?

Summary so far:

Decided to remove one shim from needles, check

Put together and checked carb sync, check

Put it completely together and went about my day, check

Came back several hours later for a quick ride; started up fine with a little choke.

Let off some choke and it dies.

Problem persisted; then got worse, would hardly idle at full choke.

Cranks, but no start. Fuel in carb bowls, checked that too.

Battery on trickle overnight; coming back to it in the morning before work.

Flooded engine? We'll see...

A puck-like object towards the rear of the tank, near the seat...

Seems like a Jose would go to it, but I have never seen one there.

Yep, a vacuum hose gets connected. The petcock is vacuum driven vs. gravity feed. So it sounds like it runs all fuel out of the bowls and dies. You have that Jose? ummm I mean hose.

He said he has both of those connected right when he stated the two petcock hose only go on one way. Then he refers to something on the other side of the tank

I don't want to tear off my tank to look under it so if the OP could snap a quick pic of this hose by the fuel sensor wire then that'll help.

Just to be clear it won't start at all right now? It just cranks?

It would coincidence since you didn't mention messing with the any electrical but do you still have spark?

No hose gets connected. The carb vent hose just lays over the airbox.
Did you adjust your idle speed at all?

Didn't touch the idle speed at all. Made changes, started up to check sync, then later that day it started acting up. Still wont start this morning. Fuel in bowls, just drained one of them. Gonna start from scratch. So there a specific tool for the spark plugs?

Just checked the spark, it's good. Charging the battery now.

I am also cleaning the air filter and letting it dry to re oil and put back in once everything else is done.

I should have just left it alone....

Ok, so I have spark, fuel in the bowls, air filter drying from cleaning, and battery charging. Hopefully we can get this thing started today. Gonna quadruple check the top part of the carbs to make sure nothing got in there while I was shimming.

I still think that somehow fuel still wasn't getting to the cylinders because of the start up and run followed by the heaitation and no start issue. It acted like it was running out of gas, but the bowls had fuel.

Here's the puck looking deal with the fuel gauge connector with it. It seems to have a vent of some sort.

Ok, sweet. Filter oiled and drying a bit, redoing the carbs, 4th time, filling up the tank completely. Well see how it goes.

I don't know how long.
I've run my carbs dry half a dozen times and have never needed to prime it to get it going.

I would a assume till the bike starts.

Once the petcock is on prime it tanks less than 30 seconds. I crack the gas cap, start the bike while it's priming, then switch to the ON position.

That puck thing is the fuel gauge with float. And according to the parts diagram, there should be no hose on it. (part 52005)

This is what I got. From farthest left, the long ass drain tube. On top of the carbs I have the two different sized petcock hoses. The large recirculating hose, and next to it, the fuel gauge connector. Am I missing anything?
