Valve adjustment price in 2022
Hello everyone.
I am in a strange place with getting the valve adjustment done on my 01 250 with 5500ish miles. I am the third owner. Who knows if the first valve adjustment at 500-600 miles was ever done. I really like to try to take good care of my equipment. Of course the enthusiast community swears by getting the valve adjustment done. However, as I wander into local dealers I have been asking "how much" to get some idea of what a valve adjustment may cost. Ideally I wouldn't have a stealership do this work I would have an independent mechanic do it but there seems to be only 1-2 in my area and they wont answer their phones (lol). Anyway. The range of reply's I have gotten range from "don't bother (gotten this 2x)" to "we haven't done one on a ninja of that age in about 8 years but we'll do it" and the general range seems to be about 300-400$ depending on if they just need checked or actually shimmed. This seems insane but they are stating if they have to adjust it'd be like 4 hours of work at the usual 75-85$ an hr of labor. So this is a complicated question. I'd like to have this done but I don't really want to spend 400$ for a dingus that doesn't even want to do it on a 21 year old motorcycle worth 2k at best. I wasn't blind to this upcoming need when purchasing the bike but the whole situation has left a terrible taste in my mouth. Not only do the people who seem "qualified" to do it seem hugely disinterested but they want a kidney to do it. That leaves doing it myself but I am super reluctant to try as I not very mechanically inclined. Any input appreciated! Merry Christmas! |

Have you seen the How-To? It's really not difficult to check them, and the pregens have adjustable rockers, so you don't need to get shims.

......nor pull the cams to adjust. Agree a DIY is fully on the money here. Incentive to learn and SAVE, clearances are super important so don't blow it off either!

The cost they told you is about what any decent shop would charge for the job, as it takes time to get there.
Are you sure the manual asks for a check at 500 miles and then again at 5000 miles? I owned a 2010 New Gen in the past and now a 2013 N300 and in both bikes is 7500 miles for the first check, and many people suggest doing it at 15k mls, which is what I did. |

In my experience, 15,000 miles is too long to wait. My pregen had about that many miles on it when I got it, and it was way past time to adjust them. It was hard to start and ran really poorly until it warmed up.

at low mileage a certain "break-in" certainly occurs, eventually bedding in at higher mileage. Fully agree with resetting valves early on according to factory maintenance chart suggestions.
Blowing a valve check/adjust off, going into early "maintenance denial" is not helpful to any motorbike in the short....or long term....tight valves obviously compromising compression and resultant running/starting attributes as TRIPLE JIM has posted above.

Of course. Following the manual recommendation wont' hurt at all.
Does it really say to check the valves at 500 miles? I'm sure the new gen stated 7500 miles for the first one. However, I wonder if it's worth to spend $400 every 5k miles on a bike that is worth $2000. |

thus the DIY suggestion was made agree newgen (shims) frequency is 7500, not sure, but i beleive the OP's (@Thouse) pregen (screw and locknut) is 6000. I'll contend doing a screw and locknut valve adjust is really not bad at all. Just take your time. Here is the pregen maintenance schedule.
I’m a worry wort and my biggest concern would be getting it apart and then not being able to put it back together then it’d be way more then 400$ to get it fixed �� That said it is in no way a primary means of transportation so even if it sat apart for a whole week it wouldn’t be the end of the world. https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Service_Schedule |

My opinion is worth as little as the next person's, but I don't even understand why someone would get a motorcycle if they don't want to get into it and learn how to use a feeler gauge, clean a set of carbs, break/rivet a chain, etc. Bikes are just too expensive and fraught with risk if you as the rider don't know your way around your own machine. Tyler, I'm not saying this is you, but you did say you are not mechanically inclined. Now you have a motorcycle... I would say it's time to start learning those skills. I'm not saying you need to become an avid engine builder, but for the sake of safely operating a motorcycle on a regular basis, I would recommend inclining toward the mechanical.

I rebuilt a Subaru EJ255 in my bedroom lol.. the amount in shims I had to buy for the valves was insane about $130 just for that alone.. lapped the valves as all..
Now the adjustment on the bike is not that bad.. I will say doing the exhaust side is more of a pita than anything else. |
