Fresh carbs no start
Alright so I just bought my first bike (2009 Ninja 250r). The seller had the bike garage kept, but it was sitting for about 2 years. The bikes battery was the first thing that needed replaced. After installing a new battery, I tried starting the bike and it wouldn’t turn over. I used starter fluid and the bike would turn over but died fairly quickly. So i ask a buddy of mine to take a look at it and he said the carbs were bad and I need to get them rebuilt. So I took the carbs to the shop to get rebuilt and cleaned (I don’t own a vehicle that can haul so I only brought the carbs). After a few days I got the carbs back and installed them. I excitedly went to turn my bike on and it wouldn’t turn over. Starter fluid was the only way the bike would turn on, but it only stayed on for a few seconds. Could I have routed the hoses to the wrong places?
The point is I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong and also I don’t know what I’m really doing at all lol. I would take the bike to a shop but I don’t have anything to haul it with. Is my first bike a bust? Please help!!!! |

starting attempts using full choke? petcock is supplying fuel to carb bowls, for sure? 100% fresh fuel? Spark plugs fresh? Air filter flowing/cleaned or replaced? Just a few possibilities.

Also make sure to check the filter going to the petcock.

Open the floatbowl drains to confirm you have fuel in the floatbowls.
Hold back on the Starting Fluid, it's bad for plastic parts. If it sputters on Starting Fluid, you have proved what you want to know - all is good except for fuel. The other possibility is the shop didn't know how to properly clean, rebuild, and adjust the carbs - which isn't uncommon these days. That's why we always suggest you send carbs to ducatiman - he knows how to do it right. Be sure to charge the battery frequently. |

So here are some pictures that can help a little bit better. So the red hose definitely goes on the bottoms of the gas tank right? And the white circled hose goes on the other petcock on the the tank? Also do the carb hoses look to be in the right spots?

big red goes to petcock, larger of the 2, its the fuel line.
Seems your white is misrouted, plugged onto incorrect fitting, see this for correct installation https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Carbur...nia_difference

@ducatiman so I don’t have a California bike it’s the other 49 states. So why do I have a T hose on my carbs. The link you posted said their shouldn’t be a T hose their if not California?

I could be very wrong about the bike not being a Cali bike. I was basing it off of the tank not having the 3 emissions spots. And the bike still having the original gas tank.

so time to attach fuel feed line from carb inlet to petcock (large barb)
and the all important vac line, currently misrouted pointing rear over carb....to petcock (small barb) As an aside...your LH carb is not seated fully in its manifold. you're getting there.

It's also not widely known that the components of the left and right carb are not the same on later carbed Ninjas.

I'm assuming you're referring to 08 thru 12? also there's a California specifics models with the added emissions evap canister on 1988 Ninja 250 on up to 07 then after that all US 08-model got evap canister and far I can tell the only real diff is in needle jet 08 thru 12 which are specifics left and right needles as you said where 86 - 07 Ninja 250 are the same part number

Now that you've got carb-hoses routed more optimally with dedicated vacuum-hose for petcock, make sure the hose-clamp is on securely past the bulge in brass fitting.
Also trace hose coming off emissions-fitting T going to PAIR valve in front. Make sure hose is actually plugged into PAIR valve with firm hose-clamp. Vacuum leaks on either hose will cause starting and running problems. Next step after this if it doesn't work is to verify tou actually have fuel-flow out of petcock to carbs and determine its flow-rate. |

another final functional test of hoses, tank and petcock is to see how much petrol is actually flowing:
1. disconnect fuel-hose from carb-inlet 2. aim into measuring cup 3. crank engine for 10s 4. how much petrol did you collect? |

I would almost guarantee you that the carb cleaning wasn't done right !
I'm a retired motorcycle mechanic I had my own shop 2 times for a few years each and I had to pull and clean the carbs on my ninja 3 times just to get it to RUN !!!!!! and it only set for a few years ! the Ninja carbs are a bitch to clean really ! and I know bike carbs... these are harder than usual ! ..... take those carbs off and send them to ducattiman and then you will have no more problems with the carbs ! its the easiest best method.... .... Bob.....
