New member from New Orleans..
Hello everyone, I just bought a 2006 EX250 last month.
I took a friend with me to look over and test ride the bike. After all was said and done, I rode it 12 miles from the sellers house to lunch, before letting my friend ride it back across the lake for me. Once it was home, I rode it a couple miles to the nearest Cyclegear for a couple of items. On the way home all was great until the turn onto my street. Was it gravel, a bad line and panic, or maybe gremlins? Whatever the cause, the rear tire washed out and I went flying. If there were ever a question about ATGATT, it was answered that day. I was unscathed, but my beautiful bike was not. Bent left fork, bent right handlebar, broken front turn signals (both of them... it kinda fell over to the other side when I picked her up), cracked and scraped upper fairing, battle-damaged bar ends, and impressively scratched face shield. I've replaced the turn signals and face shield, flipped the right handlebar around so she will track straight, and repaired the fairing with fiberglass cloth and marine epoxy. She's back to pretty, but not running well. I had borrowed a Rebel 250 many years ago (from that same friend) when the timing belt blew on the truck I was driving. My only training then was a familiarization ride behind Sears. This past January I took the MSF course and recently got my endorsement. I bought the EX250 so I could learn on it. I'm currently learning patience, and the wonder that is carburetors. |

Thanks everyone. I look forward to being a regular member here. Also looking forward to diving into the carburetors on Friday. My goal is to get her running well and use her to commute to work (better parking). I tried two Saturdays ago and she died once on the way there and twice on the way back. I'll let you know how Friday goes.

Friday-or-Weather and filters and hoses... Oh my!
Based on the suggestion of a friend--who has worked on more motorcycles that I have and who took the carbs off and cleaned them a couple weeks prior--I ordered replacement diaphragms ($66 for two from eBay) that were to arrive Thursday. The package arrived, but only had one diaphragm in it (quick message to the seller and the second one was shipped, along with an apology).
So Friday was a fun filled day of removing the carburetors, oiling and installing an air filter (wasn't one when I bought the bike), and picking up some fuel line and an inline filter. No diaphragms and no availability of my friend to come by meant the carburetors got to sit on my desk. I was on the fence about opening them up and poking around, or working on other time-sensitive projects while debating whether I should just contact Ducatiman and see about getting my carbs properly cleaned and spec'd. Cue ominous thunder clap from that evening. The intake ports are covered with plastic and the hose clamps are tightened down--the whole bike is covered as well--so the weather shouldn't do too much while the carbs are off. Fast forward to today, twenty minutes ago, I'm looking at pictures on ninjette and comparing them to carbs from my bike... something is.... different. Hoses seem.. wrong. I opened the repair manual and combed through the pictures there.. they match the pictures here, but not my carbs. So I change the hose connections on my carbs. It took maybe thirty seconds. (I took pictures, but no idea how to post them yet.) I'm on my lunch break. No time to reinstall the carbs today.. maybe this evening. <Fingers crossed> |
