Caught doing 150
Obviously not on a Ninjette. I`m sure Truong, Silver Bullet, and the rest of the Maine riders saw this in the paper. A 21 year old student at Eastern Maine Community College tried to outrun the police on his Yami Literbike. He was picked up on radar doing 150 and did elude the police by lane splitting and other "clever" stuff. He did manage to get home, park his bike in the garage, and head off to class in his cage. Appearently, someone tipped off the law, and after he admitted his transgression--"I was being stupid", he was arrested and charged with a myriad of offenses, to include Felony speeding (150 in a 65 zone), driving to endanger, eluding an officer, and some other stuff. I guess there will be a Yami Literbike for sale in the Bangor area soon, since he won't be riding for a while. 150 on I-95 through Bangor--Yikes!!!

In most states they consider that attempted suicide.

Rick, That article just blew me away. Actually, he was really lucky. Then again, skill vs. luck---who knows? If someone had not ratted on him, he would have gotten away with his stupidity. I hope he learns something. My only regret is that we have a 21 year old college student who is now a felon. That's sad---and so unnecessary.

There's actually quite a number of discussions up here (on forums, anyway) in Ontario regarding people running vs facing financial and personal devestation at the hands of our wonderful street racing law. Running from a cop is just stupid, but a surprising number of people around my neck of the woods would rather die than face some of the laws they're coming up with up here. |

Here's a radical concept:
Don't ride that fast in the first place. |

The officer has the ability to determine what qualifies as a street racing/stunt conviction on the spot, impound the vehicle, hand over a ticket for $10,000 and take away your license...before you even set a court date. You're literally guilty until someone proves your innocence. |

If that happened here, the bike would be up for sale at the police auction!

Just to secure my place as the biggest arse on this forum, I was caught doing 149mph (back when the speed limit was 55) on a Yamaha. I was in Virginia headed towards Skyline Drive and the Blue ridge Parkway. The road was empty and the cops were in a Mustang (so I had to slow down for them). I didn't try to run and I told them I was just having fun. After a scolding, and a trip to see a judge, I was back on my way.
I've had some extremely high MPH tickets but have never run when caught and was always polite and asured the officer although I was a arse, it was speeds that I could handle (a racing license was always shown). I always got a speeding ticket (although I always ask for a warning) but never a ticket for wreckless driving or driving to endanger. I have to add that I don't ride or drive that fast anymore (on the street).

had a criminal justice teacher who was a former patrol cop or whatever you'd call them. He told me that everytime he attempted to pull over a sportsbike as long as the guy stopped and wasn't a punk he'd let him go with just a little scolding b/c he knew the guy could have dipped out in a heartbeat.
i wanna say for doing 150 he'd a probably gone ahead with a ticket or two though... |

Even if no one ratted on him, I'm assuming they'd have been close enough to see his plate at some point before he took off running. Maybe I'm just wrong in thinking that plate = caught.

I'd imagine if he was picked up doing 150, it would be in a passing fashion.

If he'd been smart he'd have ditched the bike somewhere, got a lift and reported it stolen.
150 is some pace, but 'lane splitting' is not illegal where I'm from and you can do it safely (not at 150 mph, but you'll lose anyone in a cage in traffic very quickly & generally safely) High speeds can be done safely enough and while 150 very fast an R1 is well capable of dropping to a reasonable pace from that speed if the rider has the skill to do it. (by ditched I mean parked in an out of the way location, not launch it down the road shiny side down ) |

So who tipped him off to the police?
If I ever got "caught" doing any of that, I would shut my mouth and hire a lawyer. I'm sure it's not that hard to fight any charges in court if you say nothing and get a good lawyer. |

Another question: What does it mean to elude an officer? What if the cop never flashed on his lights and sirens but I make a few turns to try to lose a potential chasing officer?

To elude him means you are a better driver and the pursuing officer is jealous of your skills.
Seriously, though. I don't know what the "law" states but I have learned that it is all based on the officer's perception. The judge is more likely to listen to the officer's opinion than the defendant's opinion on the same situation. |
