Choke cable doesn't hold on older pregen Ninja? Solution with pictures

Haven't found a thread on this topic but assume a few people with older bikes will run into this inconvenience. I'm in the process of a complete rebuild of a 1987 Ninja 250E which has been sitting around in various states of repair for 29 years since it rolled out of the factory. One of the smaller issues was that the choke cable would not stay in place, you'd have to hold it with your thumb.

Upon opening the left handlebar control cluster, the small rubber damper that is supposed to be pre-loaded against the choke control lever was brittle and in small pieces throughout the housing.

My solution was to take a very rubber-like fuel hose, cut a 0.5" section of it, take a radial slice out of it so that it would fit very snug into the small recess where the spring, retaining clip and rubber block used to sit and basically let it jam up against the choke lever, as the original part used to do with a fair bit more complexity. Works fine and holds the choke in place wherever you decide to put it.
