What if the closing throttle cable snaps?
Some background information...
My throttle felt a bit weird...so I just took it apart.. I just found out that the "closing" throttle cable is about 1 metal strand from snapping.. as you know there are two of them.. the other is 'opening' I called a few local places and they don't have it.. that baffles me.. 20 yrs of application and they don't have it? Either that or N250s dont break throttle cables.. Ron Ayers doesnt stock it either.. just picked up a set of both off a 2007 on ebay from a reputable seller for a good deal.. it will probably be here Wednesday or Thursday. I put it back together and it works.. but is it safe? What happens if that cable breaks? The tear is right behind the locating peg inside the grip.. I don't want to be stranded, but I do want to ride it for some local rides I have for next week (<10 miles each way). I already missed out on tomorrow morning's planned ride... So, what if the closing throttle cable snaps??? Will the bike be driveable, but the throttle grip won't snap back? Would I be able to manually move it back to close it relatively easily? Any help is appreciated. Adam

I run w/ only the "opening" cable. No problems. There is a return spring on the throttle housing that closes the throttle, so the "closing" cable is a double safety measure.
if you decide to run the bike w/ only one operational cable before the replacements come in, I highly suggest you disconnect the "close" cable at both ends so it doesn't end up binding your throttle's operation. I do recommend you do run w/ both open and close cables, though. you will need to remove the tank to route the replacement cable properly. I highly suggest leaving the present broken cable in place as a guide for the new cable. Only after the new cable is run, then remove the old cable. |

Interesting.. maybe I'll disconnect it like you said tomorrow.. and give it a test ride...
Takin the tank off is no biggie... I planned on doing exactly like you said when I get the cables. Thanks

I would also reccomend that you practice tapping the "emergency killswitch" so you can instinctively know where it is in case of an emergency.

Thanks, Rick. I was thinkin the same thing. The throttle works fine... and it might be okay for a good time.. but then again it might have been like this for a month already... can't wait until the replacement cables get here... don't like to worry about a stickin throttle..

I pity you. My clutch cable snapped Thursday night, before the holiday weekend, while I was on my way home from Wal-Mart. I made it home by shifting w/o using the clutch, so I can only say, that's life. My new cable came in this evening, will be fixed tonight, and if it doesn't rain tomorrow, I'll be climbing on the cockpit, and flying high again. But, here is the big point, searching for a clutch cable, I found an overwhelming number of throttle cables online, almost no clutch cables. I bet you found a lot of clutch cables while searching for throttle cables.
I would like to give you some advice, (1) replace both throttle cables at the same time, due to wear. (2) lubricate them before installing them, because, I have found (not on bikes) if the system is not addressed as a whole, something else will *%@# up and another disassemble will be required. I learned this fact working on my 1992 POS F150 (AKA Ford)(ref. "Men In Black"). I replaced the clutch, pressure plate, pilot and throw-out bearings, and flywheel, but not the slave cylinder. guess what I did two weeks later, yes dropped the tranny to replace the slave, which was supposed to have been just replaced before I acquired it. Live and learn... then pass on the knowledge. So have fun, then ride, err fly.

I ended up buyin two throttle cables the next day and replaced them both.. throttle action is much smoother.. lubed them up before they went in.

cool, Grn99Kawi I'll be lubing the throttle and clutch wires on my new (to me) ex250 —I have yet to purchase the cable-lube device that makes it less messy to spray down the cable sheath.
...but do you guys use a special spray lube or wd40 or a water-repellant grease, etc? I definitely don't want to get corrosion / breakage in my braided cables, although it sounds like your problem was a contact wear issue more than a lube one... |
