New European Rules For Motorcycle Gear
A victory for ATGATT and safety standards, hopefully US and DOT will follow.
It will help persons obtain safer gear, and hopefully help consumers to avoid substandard gear. Just like helmets. http://www.fema-online.eu/website/in...torcycle-gear/

How long before "approved" clothing wear is mandated (like helmets in many US states). Driving the cost of riding a motorcycle out of reach of many people.
I'm all for a rating system of gear with standardized testing protocol conducted by independent labs. But, I really hate the intrusion into peoples lives by mandated gear. |

It would be nice to have a consumer reports rating system for motorcycle gear.

I like the idea of having minimum standards for abrasion and whatnot. I can't see it ever going down the path of mandating gear though.

I'm another vote for more standards and testing, but NOT for mandating wearing gear by law. For the sake of freedom and liberty...

It's not a victory for ATTGAT since there is no mandate that riders must wear approved gear.
Only that the gear being sold must adhere to certain standards. Which is a good thing. Freedom of choice is unhindered.

I respectfully disagree,
It's not about mandating the rider to wear, it's an industry standard limits, like DOT and SNELL standards for safety equipment. It gives the rider a level of safety like buying gear that is CE rated, as opposed to cheap gear that might not do the job. I'm not about forcing others to wear gear, just educate people.

AH, it depends on how you interpret your ATTGAT statement. I interpreted it to mean that more people would be ATTGAT because a law was passed to force wearing of equipment.
What you really meant was that it is a victory for ATTGAT subscribers as the gear we buy and wear will be more protective. Understood. Agreed.

This should never result in a law. Screw new laws. Why give up some freedoms for a feeling of safety and comfort???
A rating system with testing of gear is a great solution. so this is good. I'm sure we would all like to know how the gear we will be wearing will hold up in a wreck. |

First there was no rating or testing of helmets, then in 1956 Snell died in a race car crash. It was a minor crash he could have survived if his helmet had protected him. The race car crowd wanted quality helmets and the helmet manufacturers supported testing and standards. By 1959 the first independent testing standards were developed. By 1967 we had mandatory motorcycle helmet laws being pushed by the federal government withholding highway funding for states without universal helmet laws. Within 4 years almost all of the states had mandatory helmet laws. I wouldn't be surprised to see mandatory motorcycle protective gear laws in the next 5-10 years. |
