Alpinestars vs Scorpion jacket
I am looking at new leather jackets and i have decided over these two, both in white, because they are sexy.
Alpinestars TZ-1 http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/a...leather-jacket Scorpion SJ2 http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/scorpion-sj2-jacket Astars 1.1mm perforated leather vs Scorpion 1.2-1.4mm non perf. How much stronger is the Scorpion? It looks like it will take more abuse. Astars would keep me cooler here in Florida. Scorpion has superior sas-tec armor over the bionic armor, but doesnt really have any chest armor like the Astar. Both jackets can be upgraded to ce-2 back armor. I can get the Scorpion for $160 plus $40 for the sas-tech ce-2 back armor, puts me at exactly $200. The Astar will cost me $225 plus $50 for ce-2 back armor and $40 for ce chest armor, putting me at $315. I think either of these would be solid leathers, especially with the upgraded armor. Anyone have experience or opinions on either of these two jackets? |

I lived in Florida... Jacksonville, I'd get the alpine stars if I could... I love perforated leather when it's hella hot out! It's like having a AC on full blast in your fruit of the looms
Idk if I would want that much perforation, but i love a*; my scorpion helmet is perfection though

Get the perf leather if you live in Florida.
Alpinestars makes good gear IMO. Hard to beat and it will last.

The smooth leather will be easier to clean the bugs off of. Haven't tried cleaning perf'd leather yet, but our jackets really need it.
I will agree that the A* one looks good close up and the perf leather is nicer in hot weather. |

I'd vote for the Alpinestars.
It's priced at an arm and a leg in Malaysia!

Perforated FTW.
You're going to sweat buckets in both, especially in Florida. The only way you'll survive is if that sweat can evaporate. Tip to keep cool: Use the "swamp cooler" method. Wear a light wicking base layer under the jacket. Before your ride, wet it down and leave it wet (i.e. don't wring all the water out). Zip up and go... the air flow will evaporate the water and keep you cool. Same goes for your head. Get a skull cap or light balaclava and wet it before you put on your helmet.

I just got the Astars in white and I really like it. The leather is thick enough and it flows plenty of air. The armor seems fine to me but I guess you could upgrade it.

The only upgrade you really need safety-wise is the back protector. Chest is a nice-to-have item. The nice thing about A* jackets (at least mine, anyway) is that they have pockets in the liner for A* chest protection.
I recently swapped out my track back protector for the newish A* Nucleon KR-R, CE level 2. It's light and well vented. They make basically the same protector as a jacket insert.

Id hate to sweat buckets, but the reality is, leather has the most protection, I really dont want to chance sliding down the pavement in a mesh or textile jacket, unless i start a gofundme and use the money towards an aeostitch piece

You've hit on a fundamental truth. You can get incredible airflow and you can get the best protection. You can't get both at the same time.
The answer is to adjust your expectations. You want cool and comfy? Get in your car and turn on the air conditioner. You're outside, in the sun, in Florida. Of course you're going to sweat. What did you expect? As you know if you live down there and spend more than half an hour outside, you get to a point where you're drenched. Once you're there, you're there... you can't get any more sweaty than you already are. You just live with it. This is no different. PS: I had an Aerostich a while back. It's not any cooler, temperature-wise.

I will learn to live with the sweat while riding, it cant be any worse than wrenching on trucks in a hot shop all day.
I ordered both jackets, ill see which one i like better when they get here, and return the other lolz |

haha. i hear that. i dont think that will be the case for me. Plan is to keep one, and possibly get something lighter for around town and lower speeds.
I can get this locally from me on CL for $100, of course in white. http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/c...30-mesh-jacket This would probably tear after one low speed incident, but reviews of it are good and it seems to keep you cool and protected. |

Correch makes good gear from what I've heard. I was wearing a speed and strength coat around most of the time, I know it isn't as good as leather, but I have a suit to wear when I'm really going somewhere fast. I wear my fly racing mesh jacket when I ride my bicycle, folks look at me funny, but they always have

The shoulder and elbow stuff is good though. I was on the fence about the White but now that I have it I know I made the right call. Cooler in the sun and if you keep it conditioned the bugs/dirt whipe off pretty easy.

Cortech and Speed and Strength make good stuff as well. I'd take S&S over Cortech though
If you're in the market for boots anytime soon the Cortech boots are amazeballs, I've crashed mine 10-15 times and regularly drag them on the ground (the whole boot not just the toes) and they just take it. Switch to titanium toe sliders though, I can't swap mine anymore since I destroyed the screws

It's a bit trickier when they've been ground down to almost nothing. I'd need to drill and use an extractor screw and it's just not worth it since I need new boots anyway

I didn't learn how to until last year, had managed to never strip a screw til then. I'd imagine if you haven't stripped a screw then you wouldn't need to know how to pull it

I learned when I was a little kid, there were mechanics in the army that didn't know what to do when they popped a bolt or stripped a screw... I always laughed at them before I told them how

One thing to think about is shin protection from rocks and such... that's why most riding boots are as high as work boots. Those TCX boots look a little shorter than touring boots, but not much... maybe an inch? Should do a good job of protecting you. I wear touring boots on the street and full race for the track. The touring boots are really cheap ones... Bilt Trackstars from Cycle Gear... and they're working pretty well. Life looks to be about three or four riding seasons, which is more than offset by the price. It's a race between the sole wearing out from my rearsets and the material giving up around where it bends at the toes. They have all the basic elements right... tall enough to afford shin protection, with hard panels on the front of the shin... and they're perforated. Comfy enough to wear at work, too. They don't look as good as those TCX, but I don't give a rip about appearance. Ankle support in a non-race boot is going to come from the boot's material, not any additional stiffeners. You don't see that stuff until you get into real track gear. My track boots are like ski boots, with a plastic exoskeleton... a bit hard to walk in for any length of time.

i checked oit those bilt trackstars, they seem beefy, and CHEAP! got my rma for the astarsbfastback, and ordered the tcx x-moves. excited |

I got a pair of slightly used Sidi Canyons on ebay. They are the perfect everyday boot. Good protection, look semi-normal and not too hot. I highly recommend them.
