My first bike...
And my first time posting here. I just bought a 2007 ninja 250 and I'm extremely excited about it. All of my google searches for maintenance, how to and whatnot have basically pointed me to this forum so I figured I'd register here. I am amazed by how much good info you guys have here! Way to go, I'm happy to be a part of this community!
So the bike has ~17k miles, and I was thinking that it was near the end of life for this motor, come to find out that with proper maintenance people get 40-60k miles! That means my bike is still a baby. Lol well having no idea when any maintenance occurred last I figure it's a good idea to go ahead and do it all. The bike has never been dropped, there are no scratches anywhere on it. The engine fires right up and runs extremely smooth. So I figure change the oil and filter, coolant and brake fluid. Clean air filter, clean lube and adjust the chain, check and adjust the valves, check and balance the carbs, change spark plugs (NGK), and check/adjust play in throttle, clutch and whatnot. Am I missing any big things? I have a manual so I will end up going through and making sure I don't miss anything. I would LOVE a factory service manual but feel like $60 is a little steep to shell out for it. If anybody happens to have a converted PDF copy I would very much appreciate it if you shared. Pm me or whatever. I very much look forward to years of fun with my bike and being a part of this forum! 🤗 |

Congratulations, you own the best Ninja 250 ever produced! 40-60k miles? I know several still ticking above 100K miles. Please, follow this: http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Service_Schedule Lube all the steel cables, brake's moving parts, steering bearings, swing arm pivot, rear suspension's linkages, big sprocket bearing and hand and feet control's levers.

Welcome!
If you don't find a free shop manual: the $60 is worth EVERY penny! Have fun tinkering!

There are inexpensive CDs available with the manual on them. Be warned that there is a base manual and two different supplements. The supplements are for the Ninja 250R and the ZZ-R250. I've seen eBay CD sellers that don't realize the supplements they're selling are not the complete manual. For my '05 Ninja 250, I needed the base manual ('87 and '88) and the Ninja 250R supplement to cover everything.

I wouldn't think a 2012 supplement would be correct for the '07s and earlier. I would expect the '08s and newer have completely different manuals.

not all bikes have the same parts, that can get you into trouble sometimes (I been there before)

I hope I'm not breaking any rules here, but I got my CD from eBay seller mich-anit for $14.99, free shipping. It's scans of the paper manuals, so it's not searchable. The title was:
"86-07 Kawasaki Ninja 250R GPZ 250R GPX 250R ZZ-R250 Service Repair Manual CD" There were three PDF files on the disk: kawasaki_ninja_250r_gpx_250r_service_87-88.pdf (base manual) kawasaki_ninja_250r_gpx250r_supplement.pdf (supplement for later Ninja 250R) kawasaki_zz-r250_supplement_90-96.pdf The seller is in Canada, but shipped the disk to me free. He still has the listing active: http://www.ebay.com/itm/86-07-Kawasa...gAAOSwHnFVlqPG |

Welcome!
I have the '88 model, and bought a digital copy of the manual https://www.4shared.com/office/LSS2L...Ninja250R.html https://www.4shared.com/office/y86sm...0R-Supple.html Unfortunately I don't have any of the more recent supplements, but all the information in here should cover the important parts of your bike anyway. |

Welcome! Changing all the fluids when you buy a bike used is a great idea. Sounds like you're a pretty proficient mechanic to do all that from the get-go. One thing to consider would be changing the fork oil (and probably using thicker oild and proper springs for your weight while you're at it). Also, I really hope it's not on the original tires at 17k, but take a good look and if there's any question get new ones. I'm a huge fan of Michelin PR4s for all-around use, but there's lots of other good options.
Also, get yourself a good helmet/gear and take an MSF course. Motorcycles aren't very forgiving creatures. Give yourself the best chance at avoiding and/or walking away from accidents.
