Sure, there's some interesting stuff; Borg Warner, Industry 9, Cane Creek, many breweries. But good luck getting into the amazing awesome stuff... the competition is massive. I probably sound like a boring old dried out raisin here with my enthusiasm, but I'm jaded ATM. Asheville is absolutely amazing though. I'd go back in a heartbeat and I'm hoping it works out that I can go back with some friends in spring for a biking trip. |

hey everyone, thanks so much for chiming in. I appreciate the feedback and suggestions! $40,000 is not enough to live a nice life in DC, but I could scrape by. I'm honestly not sure how anyone goes about getting a job for more than $40,000 right out of college. I'm willing to bet my shop would pay me that if I were to go back! (a distinct possibility)
I'm too tired from riding dirtbikes all weekend to read through everything right now but I definitely will get to it! in the meantime I welcome more suggestions and thoughts about the industry's job needs |

The purpose of the post was to point out how foolish some people are when selecting clothing to wear riding a motorcycle. Uh, get it?

To answer your original question, I advise conducting informational interviews. Asking this forum is great, but doing so in person, out in "the field" might yield better results. There's a phrase known as "the known candidate", which you can't do ( in my opinion ) over the web.
As you speak with people in the local motorcycle shops, they get to know you. If something isn't available now, they might keep you in mind if something arises down the road. They can also lead to other outlets to consider. Just a thought... Good luck!

Opening a shop is a HUGE undertaking. Has anyone here actually done that? It requires a LOT of money, planning, risk, loans, long term financial burden, not to mention the cost of operating and employing people and I don't even know enough about bikes to do it... I live in an area where hardly anyone rides for 4 months out of the year... My two years working at a motorcycle shop is not enough experience to go open my own.

I own a shop, and work on motorcycle and auto components mostly, but it's not a motorcycle repair shop or anything like that. I started it from scratch with money I saved for a long time, and I worked many years in a similar (though not the same) industry. It can be tough. So many places for the money to go out, and it never seems as many places for it to come in. Being a business owner has advantages, but they can't be measured in dollars. If work slows down, I can work on my projects - but it doesn't pay the bills. When it works it can work well, but there will be times when it doesn't. Jay www.apexcustomcoating.com |

I'm not sure people have an understanding of the process of opening and operating your own shop from scratch. I definitely am nowhere near a position in life where I would be able to do that. I think working at the shop gave me some insight into how ill prepared I would be to open my own. Besides, I can go back and work there! |

In popular motorcycling areas there are lots of different business possibilities. There are places that rent motorcycles, motels, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, campgrounds, repair shops, dealers, photographers (like killboy.com) souvenir shops, and others I can't think of at the moment. Some take big investments and some don't. But I'd never try to talk someone into starting a business unless that person really wants to start a business.

The FLAP outfit is a unique motorcycle operation. Works well out here since there's good weather and trackdays year-round at all tracks. Last futzed with by DannoXYZ; October 11th, 2017 at 03:51 PM. |

* Sales? Read a story of a women, frustrated by a bad experience buying a car due to her gender, became a salesperson herself. She was successful, particularly selling to other woman. And the dealership had the sense to see the value as well. She did have it tough though as it is still a male dominated profession.
* HR Position with a motorcycle manufacturer or large dealership? Might require some specialized training/certification. * Sports psychology? Do professional motorcycle race teams hire sports psychologists? Don't know myself. Might require a graduate degree. * Possible Targets # Motorcycle manufacturers # Dealerships # Aftermarket part manufacturers (clothing and/or parts) # Aftermarket part vendors # Professional race teams |

I wouldn't mind selling certain bikes, but I'm honestly an awful salesperson. I'm sure I could learn the skills but it doesn't come naturally. I interviewed for a sales job a few years ago at Honda of Rockville (yes I'm calling them out) and their pay was $800 a month - or, umm, FIVE dollars an hour for 40 hrs a week. Plus 12% of the profit that the dealership made off each sale (usually $800-1000 off each vehicle). No thanks...
Aftermarket parts companies would be awesome. I saw a sales position for Vortex in Salt Lake City for 40k plus commission. I'll keep looking. Also interested in event planning and behind-the-scenes stuff for events that the AMA puts on; I know people travel with motorcycle shows like the IMS, which could be interesting too... thanks for the brainstorming.. keep em coming.. I did think about having a motorcycle shop/cafe.. like eat food and pay us more money while you wait for us to fix your bikes... |

How about this idea for your own shop? What about searching out an established "Mom and Pop" shop, where the owner is close to retirement and/or selling? It is already established, and most of the time, they will stay on during a transition period. They may evenprovide the financing for you!

Southern coastal NJ, as I was hinting at above, is a very pleasant place to live. I spent many summers at Ocean City, and that whole area is beautiful, from Cape May to Atlantic City, and the farm land inland from there.

Flanders, just about 2 miles south of Route 80 off Route 206. Commuted to Xerox Corp. in Morris Plains and then Princeton.
By the way, North West New Jersey is nice country also. Bill
