Does the oil look clean (like new)?
Increase idle some (~1800). That will help the oil pump.

this is a fantastic post as most people don't realize oil filter has a direct limiting factor on oil pressure... the oil has to go through the oil filter... if the oil filter doesnt let enough pressure through guess what happens!

OP stated he used a Wix oil filter unless you know there's a different model of wix that fits our bike?
edit: Blue beat me to the it.

However, that supplied oil will be dirty (not going through the paper cartridge), which is the second worse thing that can happen to the bearings and other frictional parts. This case is very strange, because it is a new engine with proper oil in it.

Another possibility is loose wiring/bad terminal contact.

It's not that strange at all. Noticed what the OP said and did not say. "...today it was 17 c out" (which it was warmer weather in his location than what it had been prior) "....well ive noticed that some times when bike is warm and its left for 30 mins or so when i restart it oil light stays ON till i rev it up a bit" (A low idle speed at start up can cause the light to stay on until proper rpm speed is reached. A second or two for the light to go out is normal) OP makes no mention of use of choke at start up or any other incidences when the bike is running (light flickering, overheating) just some times when noticed there appears to be an issue. |

Read this before the next oil change:
http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Preferr...not_be_used.3F Also make sure that the bike is perfectly vertical (sideways) and on its tires and on flat surface when you check the level; a few degrees make a huge difference in the level shown through the visor. As Blue mentioned above, it would be good for a better diagnostic to have duration and RPM data associated to the events that keep the light on. He is spot on: if the initial rpms' are too low due to lack of choke, then the pump cannot develop enough pressure. Turn the engine off if the light stays on more than a couple seconds and never twist the throttle up above ~2000 rpm trying to make it turn off.

well when engine is warm no choke when cold choke the light stay steady ON its not flickering it ONLY happens when starting the bike and it seems to happen randomly
oil light NEVER comes on when driving id say normal the light goes out after 2-3 secs when its staying on its like 10 secs if i blip the throttle to around 2k light goes out Im draining the bike now couldent get another wix filter so i have a fram it will be same oil as i have a 5l jug of it im waiting for my wife to leave the kitchen as im stealing her measureing cup, im going to measure the exact amount of oil the manual says to add with a filter change when i check the oil bike is level on a leval surface |

That engine is going to get damaged soon if that is allowed to continue. Are you sure that the oil filter has been properly installed? If so, you will need to inspect and clean the relief valve beneath the clutch cover. Just a crazy idea: Your bike is a 2012 model that sit until you bought it in March 2013. It is possible that the valve developed some light corrosion due to lack of oil flow for that long. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=127077 The attached test will tell you if the pressure is chronically low or if the light switch is the problem (not likely).

Don't put the same brand /type oil in it. Just switch to a motorcycle oil so you can see if there is a difference between the two types. If you have a random flow problem at start up, chances are it's the oil, not the filter. |

started it up seems to be ok now just going to go for a ride then i should know as far as tearing it apart if it continues ill put the orig factory oil and filter back in ( i saved them) and take it to the dealer they can deal with it its under warrenty for 2 years well it seems to be better i went on the hwy for a few km left bike for 10 mins or so restarted it and oil light went out right away Last futzed with by contact148; May 3rd, 2013 at 12:43 PM. |

well the troubles still continue I had it at the dealer for its 1000km service starting a few days after the oil light stays on from 5 to 10+ secs at idle
today i went for an 80km rnd trip 50% hwy 50% city i stopped for 15 mins restarted bike with NO choke idle set at 1500 rpm (by the dealer) oil light stayed on for 10 secs till i blipped the it to 2k rpm and light turned off oil level is 100% correct the oil light ONLY stays on randomly at start up it will do it for a day or more then be good for weeks I cant ever count on it ive tried to film it be every time i have the cam it goes right out! Im going to call the dealer on monday as i still have 2 years warrenty |

I seem to have developed the same issue recently after changing oil (same oil kawi synth 10 40) but used a hi flo filter. Im wondering if that was a wise decision lol.
Ive been reading all related threads. Will try filter change soon .... |

Changed filter to kn-401 last night, now the light is turning off as soon as engine starts. will monitor it.
But... I found a small o-ring in the drained engine oil. I am trying to understand where this could have come from. It looks the same size as the small o-ring that is supplied with the oil filter, but the old one was still in place when i took the old filter out. What o-ring could this possibly be? Could it be the crankcase oil passage o-ring? Not sure where to look ...... |

rubber.
the only thing i can think of is when i changed the oil filter the previous time i didnt remove the small o ring and put one on top of the old one? I did think at the time that it seemed kind of loose. But honestly i cant really see me doing that. |

Odd, but if the bike was purchased used you never know... As long as you have one on the filter assembly I wouldn't worry about it. |
