Oh I'm sure it's real. It's amazing what some guys think their "art" is worth.

Well, I hope they get their 22k, that means my scrambler I ride to work every day might be worth 16-18k. Hell once I get my new tank painted (I do have an art degree so “real artist”) I could be pushing 20....

More info on what appears to be the same bike here: (though the ebay link says '87 and this version of the description says '02)

I'm sure he spent a lot of time and some money on it, but it's hard to imagine him getting what he thinks it's worth. To me it's worth a lot less than a stock bike. |

Yeah, for that asking-price, bike should've been done up better.

Right, no front end swap, no wheel swap, no brake upgrade. All things that are, while not bolt on, not the hardest things to do if the result will be a 5 figure ninja 250 build. I don’t mean to throw stones, but some times I find that flash and decals make the hard work some people do to make bikes run and function seem like less valuable part of the equation. It makes people think that bar end mirrors are worth spending more money on then throttle linkage you will never see, or that cool wheels and suspension matters more than what it might be doing to the geometry of the steering angle and swing arm.
I will step down off my soap box now... I work with a lot of designers and architects and often have to remind them that “yes that’s very nice looking and ver innovative, but who will fix it when it breaks and how will anyone eve service it”..... |

Yes, today's modern world is more flash and looks than ever.
Just like those house-flipping TV shows, they just do skin-job that makes things look good. But the underlying structures aren't even repaired or upgraded. Leaky roof, leaky plumbing, heater & AC that doesn't work, cracked foundation, pfft... who cares as long as it looks good! You end up with a nice-looking piece, but no go. A beat-up ratty racer with upgraded suspension and brakes will run rings around that thing. I know what I'd want to ride. |

Its the hipster background that drives the price so high. Everyone knows that $1 piece sold in a hipster store becomes a $20 piece. So here we go....

Hipsters are horrible! I walk buy useless stores like that every day in S.F. I threw away couple racing bicycles years ago due to worn-out drive-train, bent hangers, wobbly rims, etc. I could've just stripped drive-train and sold it to hipsters for $$$!
Hmmm, still have one bike left I'm not using... |

I got my Surly disk trucker bicycle frame (Surly does seem to position themselves very hip but that was not the reason why I bought it) from one of the hip places in downtown. The guy gave me a good discount assuming I would purchase the rest if the components from them. But me optimizing my expenses ordered all the stuff from Europe. He was not happy and did not reply to my emails even I never promised him though and it was not the condition of the purchase. Before you sell that bike of yours that you are not using make sure you convert it to a fixie. Or to a single speed as a minimum. Brooks saddle and wraps will also add some value Adding a shopping basket on the front will double its value ! |

hahhaha..... flower-basket!!!
Hmm, Trek 2000, aluminium double-butted tubing with vertical dropouts. Harder to convert to fixie... There are idler-pulleys for that! Seems fixie-craze has died down here. Too much work for hipsters to deal with S.F. hills. I remember back in '80s when real bike-messengers ruled the streets. They all hung out and end of Market St... waiting for calls. Not sure any famous ones came out of that group like Nelson Vails from Manhattan... Heck, there were even bike-messengers in Santa Barbara when I went to university. Those were real fixies! Unlike flash ones popularised by hipsters.. blechhh |

Willing to bet the joke is on his wife, or possibly base commander or something..they tell him he needs to sell it, so he says "OK." Then when asked why he still has it months down the road.." it's in the ads, but nobody is interested! ( but not telling what he's selling it for. )
