Is this knocking ticking normal?
Started up the bike to move into the garage today as it's getting colder now and noticed the ticking sound. Wondering if it's normal? I haven't had valves adjusted nor have I looked at the CCT yet since I've purchased it about a year ago. Regular oil changes every 3rd track day (taken it for about 10 or so).
Would appreciate any direction or advice so I can have it dealt with before season begins. Thank you! |

I have been curious about this, and don't know the source. I have wondered if the source could be the camchain or the valves. I had my bike serviced this fall (including valve check / adjustments) and don't remember if the sound disappeared. (Now it's stored for the winter.) (I'm the only owner from when the bike was new, and the ticking started shortly before it reached 65000 km / 40 000 miles on the odometer.) |

I can't really hear the ticking sound myself but suspect at 40k miles it may well be cam chain or valve lash.... that's my guess

Try the old mechanics stethoscope trick. If you don't have one use a long handled screw driver. Touch it to the engine & listen to the noise, move it around until you find the loudest then you can guess what is making it by the location.

Does not sound normal at all. Sounds like combustion leakage (highly unprobable because of coolant jacket, unless you left the spark plug wiggling loose), exhaust leakage, a huge intake leak by the engine, or an ignition snap from an exposed arc coming from a degrading ignition coil or wire/boot. The way it's not consistently noisy makes me think it's not valve tick but I could be wrong.

I had a bike start squeeking on me one time....the squeek sped up and slowed down with the throttle..... Yep it was a loose sparkplug ! i tightened it down and the squeek went away ! .... it almost worked it's way out !
