My 09' 250 is running rich, right? What can I do.
I'm like 90% sure my bike is running rich but I'm not finding a lot of help online. When I start the bike it doesn't need choke even when super cold, and if I give it more than 50% choke it instantly dies and wont start unless i revert it. The bike smells super rich and last time I checked the plugs they were pretty dark. Mileage is nothing to write home about either (43).
The bike is mostly stock other than a Devil exhaust put on by the previous owner and an extra front tooth I added. I have already leaned out the idle mixture screws to about half from default. Not sure if I should reduce it more there, or if the next step is to buy new main jets? If the next step is indeed jets I'd love to be pointed in the right direction as to what size and where to buy from. |

i'll go out on a limb.....if your bike is running rich, i'd surmise the float valve to seat "interface" is weak....varnished, not fully sealing. In reality, not simple, but quite a tricky situation to correct. A full "clean and reset" is called for.
To begin with...do you own ultrasonic? have compressed air? a place to park the bike and work indoors? Have appropriate tools? Capable and willing?

a "wet test" would reveal either integrity or leakage of float valves and establish the float fuel level....high or low, sealing or not.
THIS (see pic) is float level you are after, note a gravity fed fuel source needed to complete this test
