Stripped/painted wheel(s)

I work a 7 on 7 off schedule. While I was off I started Stripping/painting my rear wheel. When I get back again I will do the front wheel and paint the lower cowl. Let me know what you think so far.

Here is a before pic.
IMG_0242[1].jpg
I removed the rear tire and removed both the brake rotor and the sprocket. The sprocket got painted as well.
To remove all the grease and road grime I cleaned the rim and sprocket with Simple Green.
IMG_0248[1].jpg IMG_0249[1].jpg
I used a fine scotch brite pad to rough up the suface of the sprocket and rim. This is to give the primer something to hold on to.
IMG_0250[1].jpg
I used Krylon white primer.
IMG_0251[1].jpg IMG_0252[1].jpg
Now for some color. After the primer dried I painted the sprocket with Krylon Regal Blue which is the same paint I used for the rim. Sorry for the strip tease...lol...pics of rim are forthcoming.
IMG_0253[1].jpg
Now for the strip and paint of the rim. I taped off the parts of the rim that needed to be protected and were not going to be painted. The tape would not stick to the tire so I was careful not to get stripper on the tire.
IMG_0254[1].jpg
The rim after strip and a good wash to remove all the stripper. Then I covered the stripped lip of the rim to paint the hub & spokes. Both the shiny and painted parts of the rim were covered with a clear coat to protect the paint and keep the stripped part of the rim from corroding.
IMG_0255[1].jpgIMG_0256[2].jpgIMG_0257[1].jpgIMG_0258[1].jpg
The finished product instaled on the bike.

Thank you very much.

Yes, it was all done using rattle cans. I don't do much painting so I could not see investing money in a paint gun system.

Yes, thank you. I realy needed that so I could see what it would look like before I proceeded.

Finaly did the front

Well I finaly stripped and painted the front wheel. While I was in the painting mood I painted my lower cowl from the stock gray to blue.

Here is a before pic
IMG_0242[1].jpg

Here is an after pic
IMG_0265[1].jpg
I still have to wet sand and clear the lower cowl to bring out a gloss look. I still plan on painting the clear coated orange sticker on the tank but I think I am going to let a pro handle that one.

Rick, you totally transformed that bike! Looks awesome. I didn't like the painted lower cowling at first but after a few looks it is the perfect color choice. So when are you opening Rick's Custom Motorcycle Paint Shop?

Thanks Sean.
I have never liked the color of the lower cowl. After doing my rims it gave me the confidence to go ahead and paint it as well.

This looks really good! I normally don't care for painted rims, but this makes the bike look really classy.

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure about painting the sprocket but I figured if I didn't like it I could always paint it back to black.

nOW, HERE'S A TRICK...BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER HOW TO DO IT. BY DRAWING OR PAINTING GRAY LINE ( CABN'T REMEMBER IF THEY WERE LINES OR DOTS OR WHAT) ON SOMETHING AND THEN ROTATING IT....YOU CAN TRICK THEY EYE INTO THINKING IT SEES COLOR....AS I RECALL DARK REDS AND BLUES...HOW WEIRD WOULD IT BE TO SEE A SPROCKET CHANGING COLOR WHEN YOU RODE. I MEAN, NOT LIKE FIRE ENGINE RED AND SKY BLUE....I GOTTA LOOK INTO THIS...I'VE SEEN IT DONE....WILL BE BACK

Very interesting idea eddie. Are you going to try it out on your sprocket?

Naw...I'm not much into what things look like but over time, I've seen some pretty nice ideas. I saw a guy cover a car in 1 x 4 strips of wood veneer. smooth it out and shellac it. easy enough to do with thin veneer, looked absolutelt incredible...saw another guy send his Jeep body panels to Pakistan for for like $600 they hand made all new panels in stainless steel. There are a lot of very creative people.
