Sportisi fiberglass Undertail Review/DIY
I just finished up the installation of my Sportisi Undertail and rear hugger. I had a shinto fender eliminator on my bike, but Matt (ztrack157) gave me a sweet deal (because of a paint crack) on the undertail that I couldn't resist.
You can get directions for the hugger, so I wont go into that installation in too much detail. One tip though that I dont remember being in the directions is you need to rotate your rear brake fluid tube where it mounts on the rearset outwards a little to clear the hugger when the suspension is compressed. Mine hit the hugger and scratched it a little... On to the undertail, there are no directions for this one. It is fiberglass, so there is no sagging issue here (as has been reported with other undertails). It fits very nicely as well, the tail light fits great too. First I stripped my bike down to this: (tips: You have to take the passenger peg brackets off to get to the last screws that hold the stock undertail on, also to get the battery tray out there are two screws in the bottom of that under the foam pad) To fix the paint crack, I sanded the finish on the undertail down a little (1500-2000 grit), and sprayed it with krylon fusion clearcoat. This covers it up pretty well. And it turned out so good that I ended up spraying my hugger the same way to get the paint extra glossy. Once the bike is stripped down, be very careful when installing the undertail, I scratched mine a little from screws that protrude inward. Onto the biggest problem that I faced, the license plate and the rear blinkers. It doesnt come with any licence plate brackets, and the two holes in it are to secure the tail light. I used those two points to mount my license plate and blinkers. Here are some pics of the bracket I made out of galvanized sheet metal: I painted that bracket flat black. To light the plate, I used led license plate bolts, those are not too fun to work with... Heres how everything looks mounted on the bike (without rear blinkers): To wire the licence plate leds (and later the blinkers), I drilled a hole directly behind and in the center of where my bracket mounts. As you can see, the license plate blocks the integrated blinkers on the undertail from directly behind, you can see them off to the side though. Now onto the blinkers, I did not use the stock blinkers because I think they would be too heavy for where I wanted to mount my blinkers. I ordered led blinkers from amazon.com (to work in conjunction with the blinkers in my integrated tail light and the blinkers in the undertail). To get the all led blinker setup to work you need either a resistor on each side or a new flasher, I went with resistors. I found that with 8 Ohm 20w resistors the blinkers flashed sufficiently, the resistors that came with my shinto tail light (5 Ohm 20w) seemed to flash the blinker too fast for my liking. To mount these universal led blinkers, I made a bracket that mounts onto the rear of the licence plate bolts. This is the finished product, if you want close ups of the blinker bracket, or have any questions or comments let me know... I am pretty happy with this setup, it finishes the rear of the bike nicely... |

Very cool but, can we get a little more info, please?
What undertail piece is that that replaces the brake light? Does it somehow also replace your tail like the Ducati-style one because I don't see the rest of that "bulk" even though it seems to be painted over the brake light. |

The people with the Ninja EX250R must be having a great time with the Royal Enfields. I tried one out here, and it was painfully slow. Incidentally, nice job on your catalog.

I noticed that it doesnt have the holes for the rubber well nuts that hold the stock undertail in. Because the bolt going in the right side also holds a piece that routes some of the cables along the right side of the frame, I figured I better ask: did you have to make alternative mounting/routing?
