Lowered + swingarm spool people watch out..

Hey guys,

I'm not sure if this is already a known issue or some sort but I searched and couldn't find anything about it so I wanted to warn people about this. If you have the bike's rear lowered 1+ inches with the swing arm spool installed along with you, you better beef up the suspension otherwise the exhaust will be damaged if you ever travel over a big bump or pothole. The spools will go up and actually will hit the exhaust's side and dent it.

The spools I have are shogun's and HMF slip-on exhaust. I don't know if this will happen to any other slip-ons or full system since they all have different shape, but this definitely dented my stock muffler as well. Here are the pictures.

And yes, this was how my weekend started I was doing some maintainence and found this out.

EDIT: Actually a little bit more search there was a thread about this oh well.

Yup, it's in the lowering DIY and wiki entry. I think Zartan noticed it first awhile back on her bike, and recommended to remove/replace the spools each time the bike needs to go on a rearstand, or there's a risk of what you've just experienced. Bumping up the rear preload can lower the likelihood, but not eliminate the possibility.

ANY time you lower thebike you need to be aware of clearance issues! Thanks for sharing though. Spools can always be taken off and threaded only when needed. Has your tire rubbed the undertail area at all? Might not wanna go up un size there on a lowered bike without some suspension work.

That's because they are slider spools. It's always going to slide on the can before the spool though!

Yeah I wish I saw the Wiki post . I'm currently patching the cracked open area with fiberglass resin to seal it then paint it black to hide it. As long as it works without any air leak it doesn't really bother me.

I'm running 140/70 I think I bought the tires from Kristy on the forum. It actually hasn't rub the undertail at all. I'm guessing it's because of the swingarm spool hitting the exhaust preventing the tire from going up any further to rub the undertail. I beefed up the suspension to the 3rd click hopefully it will fix everything.
