New paint job, really this time, and lesson

So last I was here my bike had been vandalized with spray paint and I had cleaned it up pretty well. You can see that thread: http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=50052

However, you could still see scratches where I had dropped it and various other mishaps, which bothered me. I then took it on myself to paint it. In my mind i wanted Line-x or Rhino Liner. Those are expensive so I got it in my wooly head that I should try a brush on bedliner. Bad idea, it looked like Emo Liberace:

I then tried to use Plasti Dip to save it. Then it looked like the Le Brea tar pits threw up on the fairings:

Now it's time to give up and strip it and do something more conventional. I Try Acetone, which did remove the bedliner but melted the plastic:

DOT3 brake fluid, removed the bedliner but made the plastic really brittle and shattered:

So now it's finally time to seek professional help. A good majority of the places here in Santa Barbara wouldn't touch bikes. Of those who did, no one wanted to touch plastics with bedliner on them. Finally found a place who said that it might not work because after sanding these kinds of plastics down, they begin to out gas and the paint might not adhere to it. But they gave it a shot and here are the results:

Let this be a lesson to all you Males and Engineers out there. If you think you can do it, you properly can't and shouldn't.

Looks great now. Before you used the bedliner stuff and Plasti Dip did you experiment with them on something other than your bike?

The fact they were able to save that catastrophe is nothing short of amazing.

No, I had to get 2 new rear fairings.

I had started with one panel first, but then didn't want to clean the paint brush so I just did them all. After the bedliner, i did the plasti dip and acetone/bedliner on one panel at a time.

The paint work is actually not the best, there are a few blemishes that don't show up. The worst part was their lack of communication, so I wouldn't actually recommend them.

looks good. like the flyscreen too. painting plastic is just like painting anything else even if its bare plastic. you have to use the appropriate adheasion promotor to get the sealer or primer to stick. unless kawi is using some space aged plastics (highly doubtful) it should be made of one of the same plastics used to make bumper covers for cars. i cant believe someone would spray paint another bike! did you knock up somone's old lady or something? lol.

i plan to paint the wife's ninja this winter.

that's how so many of my projects go...oh, this seems like a good idea...and i end up making it a much bigger project than it ever had to be

Why did you originally want to use bedliner? Did you want it to be chip/scratch resistant?

Thanks! Its a 2003 BMW Titanium Gray. It looked the best in the book.

I wanted it to be scratch resistant and hose down-able. I still maintain that it would look pretty good if it were line-x where the texture was finer and more even, and it wasn't shiny.

Thanks Everyone for the compliments! If anyone wants more shots of the paint, the clear tank protector or how i had to use Schedule 40 PVC to mount my turn signals, let me know.

It was 650 to remove the bedliner, prep and paint it. It was another 150 because I needed a crack fixed.

Looks awesome! Definitely a breath of fresh air to see a color like that on the ninja. But you have definitely convinced me to not attempt a DIY paint job and just bring it in to the professionals. Thanks for the laughs but most importantly the lesson (that I didn't have to learn the hard way). Great post.

Btw, did you smoke out your front lights? I was thinking of doing this but not sure if it's legal at all.

Its tinted using an overlay: http://www.scratchon.com/store/power...se-cover-2008/

I am pretty sure it is illegal, thats why i can easily peel it off. I also have an HID kit, so the loss of brightness isn't really there.

It's probably the same material as the previous generation bikes, straight ABS. Prep and paint for ABS is ridiculously easy, it's nowhere near as much a PITA as dealing with TPO and urethane prep.

Cool, let us know how it goes. I used what ever the cheapest one on ebay was. Mine came with the correct spacers, CurrentSea's didnt.

So after this fiasco, you would think I could be out there riding, right? No, after a ride with Jankee, someone cut the helmet off my bike, gloves too. There were 2 bikes and 4 helmets. I think all that's happened to my bike is a sign that i shouldn't be riding... or something.

Haha, the thing is it did ... I did the front fender first and didn't think it looked that bad. Oh how wrong I was.
