Canvas-lined gear?

Has anyone gone down in gear lined with canvas? I have lined a couple pairs of jeans around the butt / hips / upper thighs (on the inside) with 4 layers of canvas fabric, just so I could have a few more pairs abrasion-resistant pants to wear to school since I ride everyday and didn't want to wear the same weird motorcycle-specific stuff over and over (and the 4x12 piece of canvas was on sale for $7, and I already had heavy nylon upholstery thread for my sewing machine, heh).

I've seen plenty of pics of guys who had their jeans tear open / wear through during a slide and the resulting rash. I am just hoping the extra 4 layers of pretty heavy fabric will do the trick as long as I don't go down at like 100mph, haha.
