How loose should sport boot insteps be? (sidi+wide feet)

How loose should the instep of sport boots be? I've been riding in wide timberland hiking boots for a while and would like to get Sidi B2's, but I have wide feet. When I try on Sidi's that don't feel like they're crushing my toes, the instep is loose enough for my heel to come off the footbed when walking. On the other hand, the boots are for riding and not walking, so would the loose instep make it easier to shift?

I have a pair of Vortice, and my heel does move without the addition of an additional insole. One size smaller, my toes were being squeezed from the sides, but my heel didn't move. I settled for the larger size with more toe room. The added insole made the boot fit better - no heel movement.

The euro sizes made for some confusion because the sizes are not an exact conversion.

Sidi boots are typically designed for a slender foot. If you have wide feet and your SIDI boots are loose on you, I'd guess you have a size or 2 too big for your foot.

Alpine Stars and Oxtar (now TCX) are typically made for a wider foot.

Sidi also makes a wide version of their boots. I think the OP may have those instead of the standard version. I have wide feet as well, but haven't tried any track boots since I'm a noob and also don't plan on doing any track days any time soon. I wear Dainese Mig 2's for commuting and they're a perfect fit, even for my size 4E feet. I also wear Dainese shift shoes for the summer. Some Dainese boots are slender, but some can accomodate wide feet.
