define "takes off".

do you have the proper amount of free play at the clutch lever? if not, adjust it so you do.

when was the last time the oil was changed? how many miles on the bike?

When you engage the clutch, take a look at the clutch box by the bottom
right side of the bike. If the mechanism that attaches the clutch cable to the
box fully contracts, then its not a clutch lever or cable issue. If it doesn't,
contract, then the problem lies with the cable or lever.

Sorry this isn't a fix, but it'll cross out some possible causes.

It's not unusual for these bikes to get a "sticky" clutch - the oil, by it's viscosity, holds the plates together. If you ride it it will loosen up. It happens if the bike sits for a while unused. You can also loosen it up by just rolling it in neutral back and forth, but take it for a ride and it should go away. There's probably nothing wrong with the clutch cable adjustment - don't start adjusting things 'till you ride it and free it up. You may make matters worse by messing it up. It's just a peculiarity of this bike and may happen every once in a while and there's nothing really wrong with it. While it may be due for an oil change (and check the level), it can happen even after a change. Ride the thing.

ok. problem solved. my bike was having trouble starting and with the clutch "sticking" i guess thats what you would call it. i drained my tank and carbs. added 2 gallons of new gas with 3 ounces of sea foam. started it up with half choke. let it run for 5 minutes. took it around my neibhbor hood and it ran perfect. no problems from the clutch at all. guess it was just the cold oil?? thanks for the advice.

Good for you, changed the oil and all that and the clutch has "unstuck". Riding it and running it fixes that, should it ever happen again, and if it does, don't worry about it, it happens every once in a while. It can happen with warmer weather too, most likely due to the bike sitting for a while unused.
Try Berrymans B12 Chemtool instead of Seafoam - only $3.79 at Walmart or Autozone or Advance instead of $10 a can, and some think it works better. Use it every 3 or 4 tankfuls 1oz/gal of gas and you'll never have a gummed up dirty carb again.
Again, glad it's running well and you're happy now.

My 2006 does that too with the clutch sticking when its cold. The next time I change the oil, I'm going to use full synthetic and see if that helps.

It may have nothing to do with the type of oil, it may stick once in a while with the synthetic too - just a peculiarity of the clutch where the plates stick together with a thin film of oil.
