Yeah, the forum was having some trouble last week. Here's the pic I wanted to show:

I'll take a better one tomorrow to show the clearance on my chain guard.

The sides of these tires look totally useable in the pics. Can someone explain the "pinching" again. Maybe I just can't see them good at the right angle.

The pilots in this post are what I would call "not usable" sides.

Since the tire is meant for a wider rim, putting it on a narrower rim pulls it in on the sides, making the edge of the useful tread surface on the tire much steeper than it would be otherwise, and unusable. By the time someone got anywhere near the edge of the tire, hard parts would be scraping along the ground no matter what the rider was doing on the bike. Look at the steepness of the angle of the tread from the GT-501's to the Pilot Roads, and it becomes clearer.

Now just not being able to use the full tread surface of the tire isn't necessarily a problem in and of itself. But the reshaping of the tire profile can have strange effects even when not all the way over on the side. On a wider tire like the BT-003's in 150, it can even be seen by the naked eye how the tread surface becomes warped when pinched in that much. These Pilot Roads don't seem to be as affected. But I'd be concerned about them for a different reason. The Roads are relatively hard-compound tires and are meant for 500+ lb sport touring rigs with quite a bit of torque. A light bike like ours with comparable little torque is just not going to get these tires up to working temp no matter what we do, and the overall performance may be less than one would think for such a modern tire.

Thanks Alex! I think I've got it now. I was trying to confirm that I was not wasting my time by trying to fit a larger wheel (different thread) to the 250 if others were getting satisfactory results from a particular tire and its size and shape.

I was going by:

MICHELIN PILOT ROAD 150/60-ZX17

in that link, but the tread pattern looks closer to Pilot Road 2's rather than the original Pilot Roads. May very well be Pilot Powers, which are a stickier tire that is meant for lighter sportbikes.

a lot of size were mentioned in this thread.

150/110 is 150/60-17 or 150/70-17?

also, front tire is 110/70-17 for the bt-016 ?

Keep in mind, and it is something that I have not seen actually touched on that much.

When you put a larger tire on a smaller rim, your not just pinching in the sidewall, your also displacing the bead on the tire, cutting down on its ability to properly match the bead on the rim. With the extra flex created in the sidewall, the bead not being seated completely, you hit a good pothole or end up with a hard entry into a driveway that has a thick rain lip, you could end up popping the bead loose in that spot. Or if you hit a something hard enough to bend the lip of the rim just a little, that bead could go ahead and let go, leaving you stranded as well.

Is it common? No. Will it happen if you use good judgement in your riding and take care when faced with rough roads and pronounced driveway entry? Not likely.

It is however, something to keep in the back of your mind because it COULD happen.
