I live in Florida and I like not having a helmet law. As someone else mentioned, it's the riders choice whether they want to take the risk or not.
Personally, I wear a helmet 99.9% of the time. That .01 percent would be when someone else wants to go for a ride if I'm out somewhere. In that case, I always give my helmet to the girl...it may not always fit right, but it's better then nothing. If we had a helmet law, I wouldn't be able to do that period without always carrying my 2nd helmet. The only exception would be if it made insurance cheaper...however again, I live in Florida and insurance isn't required :-P (wouldn't it be cheaper for the insurance company anyways if the rider just died rather then broke 30 bones and needs surgeries and stuff?)

I don't really care for helmet laws either, but I have yet to ride in a no helmet state, and it really boggles my mind that somebody would ride at highway speeds with no helmet. I can understand not wearing the rest of your gear, but no helmet!?!?! Thats pretty much a death wish.
There was a guy on a local forum that post on that works at a bike shop and was testing out a customers bike, he decided not to walk across the shop to get a helmet and had a low speed crash when the front brake locked up on him. He was only going like 20mph but he split his head wide open and nearly died.

I'm not sure about how accurate the story is since I have never researched it, but it was told to me by the MSF class instructor.
For those that don't know, Florida did at one time have a helmet law. After protesting for years, it was finally removed. The story goes that one of the biggest supporters of getting the helmet law removed, a lady, died the day that the law was removed. Her bike wasn't even on...she was sitting in a parking lot on her bike, talking. Her boot laces or pant leg or something got caught on the bike and she managed to fall over, on the bike. She of course was not wearing a helmet (though I'm sure even with the law, if the bike was off, not many people would have had a helmet on yet anyways). When she fell, with the bike, she was unable to protect herself and her head hit the ground, killing her. She wasn't even riding and died...yet had she had a helmet on, she would have almost certainly been fine. I'm not sure on the whole truth of the story, but regardless, it is a very valid story. It shows how little it takes to kill a person with head impact. You can fall from a complete stand still, and hit the ground hard enough to kill you....what do you think happens when you crash at 50 on a bike? I live where I don;t have to wear one, but I do 99.9% of the time unless I am giving it up for a girl, in which case Ill always choose to protect them over myself if I am taking someone for a quick ride.

It has nothing to do with helmet laws and everything to do with being able to see the actor. Same thing with the flying scenes.

I like the Honda CBR 1000RR for the same reasons as others on here. I think the R1, and even the R6 is waaaaay too bloated/huge (in person). In photos, those bikes are beautiful.

I'd have to vote for the new ZX10R...though it has just been recalled.
As for helmet laws...fine if you dont want to wear one, just so long as if you crash and smash your melon, the taxpayers don't have to pay one cent of our medical bills. You run out of money, they pull the plug...simple as that. |

Wow after 13 months this thread has come back to life. I think the RSV4 is hot, but probably whichever one had the best deal going on. A year or so ago leftover 2008 CBR1000RR was selling for less than the 600RR. Then there were ZX10 (2009) models being blown out around here for $8K or so. Always left over FZ1 around here for 7-8K. Some claim the R1 engine is the best road going engine with awesome sound, but its such a big looking fairing and supposedly cumbersome at low speeds. Don't know though the only literbike I have ridden is a Guzzi V11 sport - kind of cool, def different.

I think the stock exhaust on the 04-06 r1's sounds amazing, my friend had one and I'd driven behind him a few times and seen him ridding through the parking lot quite a bit. He never seemed to have any issue with low speeds. What exactly do you mean by big looking fairing? To all their own.

I thought they totally recalled all the ZX-10R's and gave people 4 250s as replacements.

I'm wondering if this thread is a discussion about favorite 1000cc motorcycles that one has ridden or just any 1000cc motorcycle in general?
Seems like the thread is heading towards the latter. If so, give some reasons why a particular model might be your favorite. is it because of what you read? hype in the media? sat on it in a showroom? test rode one on a demo? traded ride with someone who owns one? I have ridden/owned a few liter-class twins, all of them very entertaining on spirited riding, the torque generated from twins are very addictive, but also hard to recover when mistakes are made.. somewhat less forgiving than liter-class inline-4s. Couple of my (previous) favorite liter-class twins: For hyper speed, long distance travels, inline-4s are more forgiving, less viby (in amplitude), smoother operation at high engine rpm. |

I've owned 2 Sprint 955s, a Sprint 1050, an '04 R1, just sold an '01 Mille, and still have this '04 RSV. I absolutely love this bike.
To answer A's question, the sound is intoxicating. With a set of Tigcraft cans, this bike is the sexiest thing I've ever heard. There is just nothing like the rush of a big twin. I opened the R1 up on an empty highway in Nova Scotia and took it up to about 160, but you just can't do that very often. The Aprilia just pulls from any RPM in any gear with smooth power that just keeps coming. Plus, you just don't see them. Once summer hits, you can't throw a rock without hitting a Gixxer / Ninja / R1 / CBR. Just love something about riding a bike that is different from most other rides out there.

My dad also owns a K1200, which I've put quite a few miles on. An amazing bike, but it just doesn't move me like the Aprilia does. I've been very happy with all the 1000cc bikes I've owned and they're all incredible machines, but the big twins are by far my favorite. Just so much attitude compared to an I4.

That new RC8R is sweet looking, and different. Better looking paint than previous years, which to me looked like their dirtbikes as far as the plastics go. Local dealer has sold like 3 in a couple months vs the 2010 which was like 1 in a couple years.

Don't think I'll ever want a literbike to be honest, but a Ducati 848 evo might be something I'd be interested in getting in a few years.

I know someone who has one (among many other bikes, desmosedici, MV, Benelli). It gets more attention than anything else, even at bike shows. His is the 851 Duc engine, BTW to do the valves requires removing the engine from the frame, not that he has that many miles on it.
