redline in 6th gear..stock gearing
wandering how many of you guys can redline 6th gear with stock gearing? i also have full exhaust/jet/pod filters. im not sure if its my weight holding the bike back ( 330lbs and not easily able to tuck ) but in 6th gear on flat ground im lucky to hit 11k rpms. usually 80mph is the wall i hit around 10-10.5k, now obviously down hill or if the wind is with me i can do a little better. 5th i can redline which is almost 90 but i really dont wanna have to be at redline screaming down the hwy ..loL~ , my reason is i want just a little more top end, i find my self in most situations cruising at 80 on the hwy and i feel like at times i need just a little more, so id be happy to be able to hit 90 as easy as i can hit 80.. considering changing to a 15t sprocket, but if i cant get much past 10k in 6th im wandering what will happen with a 15t..

stock gearing, normal sized wind-screen, full exhaust and jetted by dealer, but still have the airbox in. easily redlines in 6th at a full tuck. i'm 170lbs

Flat open stretch max is 108ish fully tucked.
No idea what RPM's were, eyes on the road except for glimpse at speedo :P

stock gearing -leovince pipe-dynojet kit and bmc filter-zg dubble bubble-i'm 165 and my bike goes 100 i have a friend who is 6'3 and 230 and bike will only go 85 with him on it

well if you go by gear commander with stock gearing, 6th gear @ 13000rpms is 105mph, but supposedly the speedos are off by 8% or something at least on the 08-10's so probably puts speeds closer to 100mph when reading 110 . im curious to see when i get my aftermarket screen if it will effect the top end any. debating a 13t also since it may allow me to redline 6th

it takes forever to get to redline in top gear with stock gearing -have you thought about clip-ons,it's not a huge change,but does get you out of the wind a bit-on 250's i've found every little bit helps

I'm 245lbs and around 6'2"-6'3", stock gearing got me to 100mph indicated on a flat road, almost no wind. My bike was shimmed, snorkel removed and with the stock windscreen. The bike could have gone faster than 100mph but I had to slow down. I have found that on short straights I can get to around 95mph with my puig db screen with more to go if the straight were longer. Bottom line is that the bike is fast enough for any street use. It's simply the acceleration above 60mph lacks power that 0-60 has. I think your friend could get more speed if he learned to tuck in further and reduce his drag.

yeah i can redline 5th @ 90 ruffly, shift into 6th and it doesnt maintain really... drops to 80-85. i mean if im really pushing the bike to its limits i can almost do 85 in 6th on flat ground..but the usualy speed im finding is 80. if i do a 15t im thinking 5th would get me to 90 at a lower rpm , if i do a 13t i can probably run 6th to 12k and do 90. ill buy both gears and see which one is better.

Honestly, it's your weight. Force = Mass * Acceleration, therefore Acceleration = Force/Mass. Your bike does not have enough HP to change the rate of acceleration past 80mph. Wind resistance plays a major factor as well. If you are not able to tuck in due to your size, it's hindering your top speed. You're acting like a parachute on your bike. When you are on a decline, you're able to slightly overcome this barrier because the larger mass you have, the greater earth's gravity affects you.

Gearing won't do much. You can try it, but all it will do is decrease the RPM at the given speed. Instead of doing 80mph at 10k, you'll be doing 80mph at under 10k. It won't change the fact that you are hitting that air/hp wall.
If you're really needing more speed, you should consider moving up to a 500-650.

i can go faster in 5th then 6th.. so gearing should help to a extent, i just dont want to be at 12500-13k doing 90 .. like to be a little less then that IF i can. ive had bigger bikes, that was the reason i got the 250 so the temptation of doing 130+ isnt there..loL!

Academically, weight has almost nothing to do with top speed. If all other factors are the same, someone who weighs much more than someone else will reach exactly the same top speed, it will just take longer to get there. But in the real world, for motorcycles, weight goes along with size as the rider plays such a large part of the aero profile. And yes, the more wind resistance, the lower the top speed. To markedly change that, one needs to get more aerodynamic, or add more power.

Also wind resistance. If your tiny you can hide behind the fairings and windscreen. IMO

It may be a little different because I'm on a 2007 pre-gen totally stock, but I was able to redline in 6th only yesterday. I'm 5'8" 170 lb. As some people have mentioned, the speedo isn't exactly accurate, but I was redlining in 6th at 105 mph. I didn't hit the rev limit, but I'm pretty sure I could have if traffic was on my side.

Yep, I can hit 90 np sitting up like I was doing 25.. tuck and instantly gain more speed, tach stays the same.

stock was the same situation once at 80ish.. now modded i just get too 80 faster mods are.. no air box, uni pod filters, keihn 110 mains, shimmed with 3 washers, idle mixture screw like 3ish turns out, carbs synced.. alien P full exhaust. bike has 1200 miles, full synthetic oil @600. the bike runs great IMO, huge improvement over stock. im gonna attempt to tuck down under the screen next time i go out to see if it makes a difference.

now if jetting is the issue would i still be able to pull to redline easily in all other gears? i mean its not a big deal to swap jets so i can definitely try that, i just assumed its a size issue and not tucking
