Thumbs down Should I Even Care? (Bike Keyed)

When I got up this morning to go to work there were two long down to the metal scratches along both the top sides of the tank from front to back. The windscreen has deep swirl scratches too.

I live in a gated apartment complex that has limited shaded parking places and always park in front of my apartment under one of the sun protected spots. I'm guessing someone didn't like my 250 taking up a spot so they took their keys to it.

My insurance deductible is 500 USD. The bike already had a few very small places on the fairings before I bought it 2 months ago. It's not going to rust (as I live in Las Vegas) and not mechanically damaged, so I'm thinking that I'm not even going to fix it.

Have any of you had your bike keyed? Did you fix it?

(I'll post pictures when I get home.)

I'd put a big sign on it that says "F*g Dicks!" and then train a video camera on tthe bike from my apt window to see what transpired next.

that sucks! Is it an assigned parking spot or is it just first come first serve?

I'd be pissed and would probably loosen up the lug nuts of every car around my bike or the ones that usually park in that spot regularly when I'm not there...but that would be illegal so don't do it!

Do you have any idea who it may have been? Any cameras in your complex?

Spend 80 bucks on some aftermarket rhino liner type material and coat tank and all plastic. Let them try and key that.

No, it's not assigned. All of it is first come first served.
I've only just moved into the place about 2.5 months ago. I don't even know anyone.
No cameras. There is a supposedly a security company that patrols, but I've never seen them.

I would fix it if the bike was already in great condition and had no other scratches or dings...I like keeping my new things new

Speaking of which, yesterday when I was installing the camera mount I dropped the socket I was using and it chipped the gas tank a tiny bit...I nearly cried

No. I sold my wifes old bike no problem with scratches on it (first person who called me bought it). We paid $2500 for it in mint condition, then sold it a year later for $2000 with +9000 miles and in scuffed up condition. Not many people care about scratches on 250s since they just want to buy it to learn on, or want a cheap bike for their significant other or kid to mess around on.

I'd only fix it if you are bothered by it. But to me it's not worth the investment unless your bike is suffering mechanically.

As for the apartment security thing, people are A-holes. I lived in a apartment once for 6 months when I first got married and we were saving for a house. In that time people had parking lot disputes all the time. In a six month period there were probably 8 cars vandalized just in the area where I lived. The worst of it was someone taking a baseball bat to the windows and doors of a truck that took up two spots (and still no one heard it or saw it...).

I wouldn't make a claim unless damages were high. Probably just get some touch up paint. Still suck though

Rust happens to exposed steel. It does rain in Vegas and the moisture in the air will cause the reaction. Better to buy some touch up paint and cover it up than leave it exposed.

I'd be interested in this information too after what CThunder-blue said (especially if it is easy to match to a red 2007).

That would involve money which I REALLY don't have. (Non-traditional pre-med student going back after finishing first bachelors in 2008)

I hate that mentality... it is so arrogant! Anyone with that mentality should also then key Smart cars if they aren't doubled-up in a space. These must be the same people who get pissed at bikes for splitting lanes at lights (where it is legal)..... I'm just not buying the "it's not fair argument." Supposedly a drivers license is supposed to be a privilege for the mature.... I guess not.

Sorry about your bike. Every time someone even touches my stuff, I go on a rampage. I grew up (still growing as I'm 15) with little things. And if I bought something expensive, and it somehow got damaged, or like I said, touched, you better run. I also think I have OCD or something. Since your bike is scratched, I'd be constantly staring at it. I'd probably ride into a wall. In conclusion, yeah, I'd track the guy down and beat the keys out of him, and I'd at least touch it up .

Does anyone else have a problem viewing images on forums? I can't see the three pictures. I use Google Chrome.

That's uncool. I'm not sure if alarm systems are sensitive enough but I have a gorilla alarm system on mine and I use it whenever I park in unsecured locations. Like in a parking lot or structure. It doesnt help for theft but it definitely spooks anybody that tries to touch it just for kicks. Sometimes it spooks me because i forgot I had it engaged.

I think the Gorilla would detect it. I don't know if he can afford that though (security alarm). But almost any pressure makes the alarm chirp.

That's lame. I too live in an apartment complex but I have to pay for my garage spot.

Some lady tried closing the door on me when I was coming in and all the residents give me nasty looks with my bike.

Possibly complain to your landlord/apartment manager.

I might fix it. My fairing is slightly cracked right now and I've been putting it off. The Colorite for the red is like $40 because it says you have to buy the base coat for the color to match.

Maybe you could get a badass sticker to cover it up.

It's all so sad. I wanted to keep the bike stock, but that's pretty much impossible now.

I'm leaning towards taking all the fairings off and re-painting the tank black.

Edit: (After I save up a little money.)

Seems worthy. Definitively would be a nice investment.

Also, newegg.com also has some nice systems. And I don't know if anyone has suggested it, but consider filing a police report.

Id park in another spot for a week and take note of which car ended up in the space you used the most. Chances are with some time spent observing you'll be able to tell who the most likely suspect is. And act accordingly.
