Helmet Hair = Fail
I'm looking for some type of hair gel/styling gel/whatever that I can use to get rid of my helmet hair once I get to work. I need something that won't gunk up my helmet though like the typical stuff I use will.
I don't need something that will spike my hair (although that would be ideal) but something that will at least let me reshape my hair and not make a mess in my helmet when I go home. Using normal gel and washing it out isn't an option either since its rather hard to wash your hair in a bathroom sink...

A crew cut prevents helmet hair quite effectively.

Whenever I get to work I go to the restroom to change clothes, drench my hair in the sink, then dry off with paper towels and it looks good as new 99% of the time. I don't have long hair though, I don't let it drop to my eyes if I can help it.

i've always held the beliefs of "do nothing or cut off"... for some insane reason the ladies tell me they love my hair... no idea how or why luckily i've never had a job that required being presentable... you could always use one of those... uh... "do-rags"?

I just decided to dye my hair scalp colored. Works wonders: Helmet fits better, no need to shampoo, no need to buy a comb, but I find myself in the hair care aisle looking complete lost/bemused/confused...

You could get a mow hawk for your helmet, take off the face shield and draw a mouth on the front of it. I'm pretty sure I could get away with that at my job. No one would know the difference. Lol

It's basically insanely dense wax. On the plus side, you use very little of it and as it turns out, I can spike my hair... put the helmet on... and at destination, my hair is still spiked. Helmet doesnt seem to be affected and I used to use it everyday for over a year. If you want to try it, I can scoop you a small bottle of it and see if you like it. Plus, it's only like $3 at CVS for a tin that lasts forever. |

Have a spray bottle w/ water in it at work. Wet your hair and "fix" the helmet hair.
If you're gonna use "stuff" in your hair, put a bandana over your head for the ride. Any crap you put in your hair is gonna get inside the helmet.

I was scanning through this thread, saw setasai's post with the tin of wax and that was the first thing that popped in my head.
I've kept a buzzed head pretty much since the day I graduated high school years ago so I'm lucky enough to never have to worry about my hair. |

I use "Regis DesignLine Held Up" stuff, goes in like hair gel but then you can move your hair and stuff, haven't had a problem with it in my helmet. My ex got me to use it, and it's just habit now. Takes an extra 30 seconds when I get out of the shower in the morning... Plus girls can still play with my hair

Odly enough I am lucky enough to never have suffered much from "helmet hair". I have had buzzed to very long ponytails *gotta love the early 90s*. Whatever style I have had doesn't seem to suffer.

There is another method you can use which wouldn't require any money or getting a haircut.

we used to use Murray's in high school and it was insanely greasy and hard to remove. It used to gunk up in the shower so depending on how much of it you use it could wind up in the helmet...I think we used too much of it cause our tins didn't last forever

I agree it's hard to remove. My brother uses it for longer hair and he says he only needs to use it every other day because it doesnt really wash out. I suggest you try anything you can get your hands on until you're satisfied. Otherwise, just give up an leave it be. Anybody asks what's up with your hair, just say you've been riding all day. Always a great way to start a conversation. |

If I just leave it i get this wolverine look. Just from where the padding rests against my head it pushes the hair in the front straight down and the hair on the top sides stays up so I look goofy as hell. Just using water doesn't help unless I actually wash it with soap too.
I don't mind whether its spiked or shaped, I just don't want to be wearing slacks, button down shirt and tie with wolverine hair If I get a religious customer they might think I'm the devil and then I'll lose a sale I'm going to try kaiserz recommendation of Garnier Texture Paste and if that leaves my helmet looking like Jenna Jamesons money maker then I'll go with setasai's recommendation of Murrays

Have you tried the Axe stuff? The commercials are funny and if I had hair that's what I would try. Thankfully I just use my clippers and buzz my hair off every week so I don't have any worries

I use the Axe Messy Look Paste..the yellow container. I put it in and style my hair before I leave then when I get to work I just run my fingers through it and restyle it and its fine. Doesn't leave any mess in my helmet and it holds up in the Arizona heat.

Alright so I went down to Rite Aid (20% discount FTW!) to get some Garnier Surf Hair when I came across another Garnier product, Fiber Gum Putty. "This soft non-sticky fiber gel allows you to work and rework your style with long-lasting hold" Sounds like just the thing I need!

I dig this thread.
Riding make's it hard to keep your hair/face in check. It takes up so much time!!! I like the progressive commercial when flo takes off her helmet and her hair is still perfect. If only it were that easy. |
